Stay safe in the sun

Thursday, 11 July 2013 - Kevin Belsham

Well summer seems to have finally hit the UK and many of us are enjoying the long awaited sunshine. As a large proportion of our people work outside, it’s important that they and other outdoor workers take sensible precautions.

Although we Brits love to make the most of the few sunny days we get each summer, we’re not so hot at protecting ourselves from the harm it can do to our skin. A recent survey revealed that two thirds of us never wear sun cream when in the UK because we think cloud cover will protect us. Of those who did use sunscreen, one in three admitted applying it only once they felt their skin burning – after the damage has already been done.

Research also leaves men particularly red-faced, showing them to be the worse at protecting themselves from the sun than women. A shocking 75 per cent more men than women are not worried about getting sunburnt.

We want all of our people, whether employees or sub-contractors, to go home at the end of the day safe and healthy. That’s why we’re proud to be supporting the Home Builders Federation Sun Awareness campaign by providing sun safety posters and advice cards on all of our 300 plus developments across the country.

We’ve also gone a step further by linking up with on-line retailer thesuncareshop.com to offer discounted sun cream for all our employees and contractors working on site.

Construction workers and others working outdoors are offered the following advice:

  • Keep your top on
  • Keep your hard hat on
  • Stay in the shade whenever possible and during breaks
  • Use a sunscreen of at least SPF30
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration
  • Tell your doctor about any new or changing moles
