Engineering Manager

We are looking for a dynamic, confident and knowledgeable Engineering Manager who will be able to manage and produce complete engineering design solutions for residential developments, from land identification to development completion.


You will interpret reports, make recommendations for foundation designs, road designs, drainage strategies and remediation strategies and also provide engineering information for planning submissions.


The successful candidate will have experience of drawing and directing proposals for delivery of site layouts; Track record of leading and managing subordinates in a team structure; Track record of managing department fee budgets

And show thorough understanding of planning process.


The Role:

  • Management of the engineering team to ensure that all designs are dealt with within the development programme and budget.

  • Management of external consultants to ensure information is received, coordinated and distributed on time and within budget.

  • Assist with detailed programming of individual projects from land handover to first conveyance and subsequent adoption.

  • The procurement of foundation designs, remediation strategies, technical approvals and building regulations.

  • Oversee the prompt and efficient issuing of drawings.

  • Processing footpath closures and diversions.

  • Procurement of service provisions and diversion.

  • Attendance at project meetings with other departments to coordinate in a timely and efficient manner, completion of the relevant action points.

  • Manage and co-ordinate the pre-distribution of information when required for meetings and to assist with the preparation of updated programmes/status reports.

  • Attend departmental meetings to review the department’s programmes.

  • Liaise and negotiate where necessary with Planning Officers, Consultants, regulatory bodies, authorities, etc. to ensure projects achieve the set objectives and programmes.

  • Prepare and monitor fee trackers, analysing quotations against budgets and appoint chosen consultants following approval from the department Director.

  • Ensure the closed sites and bond strategy is regularly reviewed and updated.

  • Liaise with legal representatives to ensure Legal Agreements (S278,38 etc.) are progressed in a timely manner.

  • To act in accordance with TWUK CDM guidelines and ensure designers compliance with CDM regulations.

  • Advise the Company on changes in engineering matters and/or competitor’s product.

  • Assist the Technical Director in progressing the training and personal development of departmental staff.

  • Interpreting reports and providing appropriate engineering solutions.

  • Reporting internally and making recommendations for foundation designs, road designs, drainage strategies and remediation strategies.

  • Liaison with regulators when necessary.

  • Overseeing adoptable road and drainage designs in respect of S38, S278, S11, S104 and S106.

  • Co-ordination of cut/fill, external levels, private drainage and retaining wall designs.

  • Ensure all necessary engineering information is available for land appraisals.


The Person:

  • Good strong knowledge of the full development/ technical process

  • Ability to create and manage programmes, in particular Critical Path

  • Previous experience as either a project or Discipline Manager within a development organisation

  • HNC or Degree in Civil Engineering

  • Track record of negotiating successful planning consents for residential development

  • Experience of preparing working drawings and supporting information (when required) together with and understanding of technical and regulatory standards

  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and to programme

  • Excellent communications skills essential

  • Ability to manage others (internal & external) to agreed deadlines

  • Negotiation skills in sensitive planning situations

  • Commercial awareness of design and design changes
