    About Wigan

    Wigan is a town in Greater Manchester, England, on the River Douglas, 10 miles south-west of Bolton, 12 miles north of Warrington and 17 miles west-northwest of Manchester. Once the centre of the Lancashire coalfield - in the late 1800s there were 1,000 pit shafts within five miles of the town centre. Wigan no longer has any collieries. The last pit, Bickershaw, closed in 1992.

    The town of Wigan provides a wide range of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as a choice of supermarkets. The area has a choice of infant, primary and secondary schools providing education for children of all ages.
