    About the area

In an ideal location between Southampton and Winchester, Eastleigh is a railway town that combines the convenience of great local amenities with superb transport connections.

When it comes to getting your groceries the weekly shop couldn’t be easier. You can choose from Sainsbury’s, Lidl and Iceland Food for all your everyday essentials and more. When it comes to retail therapy, you can take a trip to The Swan Shopping Centre, located in the heart of Eastleigh.

Here you can enjoy over 40 retailers, a range of restaurants and plenty of family entertainment options – including tenpin bowling and the cinema – so you’ll never have to worry about what to do with your spare time.

A home at Eastleigh means you’re well connected, whether you’re travelling by road, rail or air. Eastleigh railway station offers regular services to London Waterloo in just 75 minutes, as well as Winchester, Southampton, Bournemouth and Poole and is just over a mile from your door. For journeys by car, the M3 and M27 give you easy access to Southampton, Winchester, Bournemouth and Andover. When it comes to journeys further afield, five minutes on the train will take you to Southampton Airport, which can alternatively be easily reached by car.

For those with children, your options are plentiful when it comes to education. There are primary and secondary schools nearby, along with two further education colleges in the town.

So for a superb brand new home in a location that offers everything you need for modern living, Bakers Quarter could well be the destination for you.

  • Community

Taylor Wimpey has provided 500 slap bands to encourage pupils at The Crescent Primary School in Eastleigh to walk to school – and help keep them safe on the journey.

“We are committed to supporting the communities in which we build our high-quality new homes, which is why we are working in partnership with The Crescent Primary School as part of Walk to School Month.

“We understand that family life can be busy, but walking to school is one of the easiest ways for children to increase their level of physical activity and get fit. We hope our contribution will help inspire families to swap the car for a safe walk to school instead.”

First-time buyers Robert and David step on the property ladder at Bakers Quarter.
Taylor Wimpey - Rob And David

Robert and David are thrilled to be in their new home at Bakers Quarter

Robert Wayman and David Norman have just opened the door to their first home at Bakers Quarter, thanks to the Government’s Help to Buy scheme.

“We were renting an apartment in Southampton for a while when we decided to buy our first home together and take a step on the property ladder,” says Robert, who works at the University of Southampton.

“Our apartment was built in the 1960s, so we liked the idea of a new‑build because there are no hidden surprises – you have a warranty and aftercare, plus the Help to Buy scheme was hugely beneficial for enabling us to get on the property ladder.

“I’d highly recommend the scheme – it was really easy and straightforward and it meant we didn’t need such a large deposit,” explains Robert. “Thanks to the initiative we’re paying back more of our mortgage than we are on interest as we’ve been able to get a better rate.”

Now that they’ve moved into their new home the couple have even more reason for it to be a special place, as it’s where they got engaged.

“On the day we moved in we had a bit of a joke that we have to go and find our local chip shop,” says Robert. “There we were surrounded by all of our belongings in boxes with our chips, so we opened a bottle of bubbly when David turned and stopped me and got down on one knee to propose!

“We haven’t set a date for the wedding yet but we have a few ideas in mind and there’s a charming theatre at the end of our road which we love, so we’re hopefully going to be the first people to have a wedding there!

“We loved the ‘Hamford’ as it’s a very traditional‑style home with a lovely garden, and the back of the house has a nice ‘L’ shape design with a flat‑roof extension,” continues Robert.

“The location of the Bakers Quarter is perfect – we’re a five‑minute walk from Eastleigh railway station, so we can easily commute to places like London.

“It takes me only about 20 minutes to drive to work in Southampton and it’s also convenient for David as he works at B&Q head office across town. Our house is close to the centre where there are lots of nice restaurants and amenities such as a leisure centre.”

Robert adds: “The team have been really good and Holly the Sales Executive is always really lovely and helpful. They have a difficult job sometimes having to deal with so many different people but communication was always great throughout the process.”

    Bakers Quarter Travel Plan

Travel Plans have been established in the UK for many years to help people make better travel choices. We have appointed Transport Seeds to implement the Residential Travel Plan for Bakers Quarter in partnership with Hampshire County Council.  As your Travel Plan Co-ordinator at Bakers Quarter, Transport Seeds is here to help you make the most of your local facilities and to encourage you to get more active by walking, cycling or using public transport whenever possible.  This could help you save money too! Taylor Wimpey is very committed to promoting sustainable travel at all of their new residential sites and is offering each new household at Bakers Quarter up to £80 in bus and cycle vouchers to get you going.  Advice on how to claim for the voucher(s) can be found below.

    Helping you get around

On this page you will find specific map and links to up-to-date information on various ways to get around from your home at Bakers Quarter and the local area.

    My Journey - Hampshire

My Journey is part of a collective initiative funded by the Department for Transport to promote travel choices specific to individuals living, working and interacting in Hampshire, Southampton and Portsmouth City areas.  It provides a one-stop shop for a wide range of travel information within Hampshire including cycle and walking maps, details of local cycling and walking groups, live rail updates, bus timetables and also provides useful tips on how to save money and get fitter by switching mode of transport whenever you can.

My Journey also includes a Personalised Travel Planning service for people living and working in the County.    It helps you plan a journey whether by foot, cycle, bus and rail or even by car, linking to live timetables and traffic updates.

Through My Journey, Hampshire County Council and its partners want to help groups of residents to take up the type of active travel that suits you best.  Some have asked for support to find undercover cycle parking, some want a confidence boost from adult cycle training, others have asked for advice on countryside trips by bus, bike and train while others have found car sharers to help reduce their regular travel costs.

Click here for more information on personalised travel planning for Hampshire residents.

As well as live travel updates, My Journey is also a great source to find out about local travel events such as the New Forest Walking Festival, national Walk to School or Walk to Work days or even details of local cycling club events.

If you have your own ideas about personalised travel that you’d like to see supported, or would like some transport advice for getting around, please contact the My Journey team by filling the form on their dedicated website.

Local Transport Information and Map for Bakers Quarter

Most of the information on local travel choices available in the Eastleigh area are available at the My Journey website above but as a starter, we have summarised the key information relating to Bakers Quarter on the map below.

    Local amenities

Eastleigh town centre itself is located less than half a mile from your new home; that’s just under a 10 minutes’ walk along Twyford Road at a normal pace.  The town centre, including the Swan Shopping Centre, will give you access to all necessary amenities including local shops and larger supermarkets but also to the Eastleigh bus and rail stations, both approximately 11 minutes’ walk from your home.

Being located in a central location also means that Bakers Quarter is within close proximity to doctor surgeries, dentists and pharmacies, schools and leisure facilities as well as large local employers; all easily accessible by a wide range of transport means.

    Buses

Xelabus is one of the main bus operators in and around Eastleigh and along with a few others stopping at the main bus station at Eastleigh Rail Station, they will provide a range of services to a large number of destinations for you and your family.

The nearest bus stops to Bakers Quarter can be found on Twyford Road just north of its junction with St John’s Road but the bus station is located a short walk away in the opposite direction.

Detailed information on local bus services are available on the My Journey and Eastleigh Borough Council websites above but have you heard of Solent Go?  The Solent Go travelcard now makes it easier to travel across South Hampshire by bus, ferries and even on the Hovercraft.  Your Solent Go travelcard also gives you access to the City Car Club in Southampton as well as all over the UK. These can be hired from parking bays across the city for just an hour or two, or for as long as you need.  If you are interested in taking the bus, why not take advantage of a 7-day Solent Go taster ticket of a value of £30?  Details on eligibility for all new Bakers Quarter residents and how to claim are provided below.

    Trains

Travelling by train from Bakers Quarter is easy.  Eastleigh Rail Station is easily accessible by foot or cycling and is served by a major rail network of services to the surrounding Solent area and by direct trains to London Waterloo, Salisbury and Poole, making it a great alternative to the car for both regular journeys such as going to work and school or occasional trips for leisure or visiting friends.

For greater details on what facilities are available at Eastleigh Rail Station (parking, access by wheelchair, etc.), timetables and routes, visit the National Rail or My Journey websites.

    Cycling

Cycling is a great way to not only get fit but also to beat the traffic on many an occasion.  The Council is working hard to make cycling in town safer and easier and is also supporting other organisations promoting leisure cycling.  There are loads of useful links on Eastleigh Borough Council’s website for those who want to make the most of their cycling journeys, including details of where to find adult and children cycle training, how to plan your journey on cycle-friendly routes and where to find suitable cycle parking.

In addition, as part of Taylor Wimpey’s ongoing commitment to creating sustainable developments, you can apply for a cycle voucher of up to £50 per household to use towards the purchase of a new bike, safety bike equipment and accessories or servicing of your existing bicycle.  Details on eligibility for all new Bakers Quarter residents and how to claim are provided below.

    Driving

Sometimes driving is still the most convenient way to travel but if you are making regular journeys to work, car sharing might help you save money or simply might make your trip more enjoyable.  To find someone to car share with, you could sign up with HantsCarShare, part of the national Liftshare database, and easily join for free the 710,000 people already registered.  For more information click here.

If you drive less than 5,000 miles a year, the cost of running a car or even more than one can become prohibitive but there is a way for people living in Eastleigh to enjoy the benefits of a car without having to own it.  Co-Wheels operate a ‘pay by the hour’ car club from Eastleigh town centre, all day every day and in partnership with Eastleigh Borough Council are currently offering Eastleigh residents the opportunity to join with no fees or membership charges for three months as well as up to £20 driving credit.  For more information, visit http://www.co-wheels.org.uk/ or telephone 0845 602 8030 and click on this link for details of the current offer.

    Bus and Cycle Vouchers

If you would like the opportunity to try a different way to travel, Taylor Wimpey and its partners are offering up to £80 in travel vouchers to new residents of Bakers Quarter.  There are two vouchers available and you can apply for either or both depending on your needs:

    • A 7-day Solent Go Travelcard* of a value of £30 to be used on any participating bus services within the Solent Zone, and;
    • A £50 Cycle Voucher to be redeemed at any local Halfords store towards the cost of either a new adult bike, safety bike equipment or accessories or the annual service of your existing bike.

To be eligible for these vouchers, you must be the first registered owner of the property at Bakers Quarter.  You can only make one claim per household for one or both vouchers but the maximum total value of the vouchers cannot be combined.

    * The travel card will be activated upon first use and will be valid for up to 7 consecutive days thereafter.  Once expired, it will not be possible to top up the taster card but you can register online as an individual for any of the tickets available at the Solent Go website (www.solentgo.co.uk) if you wish to continue using the service.

To claim your voucher(s), please download the form and once completed, return at the address provided on the form.
