Conveniently positioned between Southampton and Winchester, Eastleigh is a railway town with a rich history and superb connections.

Combining a coastline which stretches along the Solent and the Hamble River and 800 acres of unspoilt countryside, the Eastleigh Borough (or Hamble Valley) is a beautiful and fulfilling place to call home. Visit Hamble village and enjoy views from the quay or one of the three marinas, while the children try their hand at crabbing on the quayside. With a fascinating history and a number of heritage sites, it’s a world away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby cities, and a location that has been enjoyed by Jane Austen, Queen Victoria, Nelson, RJ Mitchell (who designed the spitfire and was first flown at Eastleigh airport), to name a few. In the town centre itself, you can enjoy professional theatre, contemporary and traditional dance, comedy, opera and film at The Point dance and arts centre, or two sculpture trails giving you the chance to take in a variety of public art around the area.

The weekly shop is made simple, with the nearest supermarkets within half a mile of The Sidings. Swans shopping centre is also just 0.5 miles away for a range of retail options and high street names, add to that Eastleigh Market for when you’re looking for something a bit different and you’ll find all your shopping needs well taken care of. When it comes to eating out, you are spoilt for choice. Whether you fancy a pub meal, a tasty Italian or some Indian spice, you will find a range of pubs and restaurants all less than 2 miles away. Entertainment and leisure options are also plentiful with theatres, cinemas and a museum all within easy reach and rugby, tennis, cricket, golf, hockey and football clubs for the sports fans.

Education needn’t be a worry with infant and junior schools and a college less than a mile from The Sidings, and Southampton and Winchester Universities within easy reach. Travel is easy too, with the railway and coach station within walking distance and if you’re going by car, both the M3 and M27 give easy road access to Southampton, Winchester, Bournemouth, Portsmouth and places in between. For journeys further afield, Southampton Airport is just 2.3 miles from home.

All times and distances are approximate.

Taylor Wimpey is very committed to promoting sustainable travel at all of their new residential sites and is offering each new household at The Sidings up to £80 in bus and cycle vouchers to get you going.  Advice on how to claim for the voucher(s) can be found below.

Helping you get around

On this page you will find specific map and links to up-to-date information on various ways to get around from your home at The Sidings and the local area.

My Journey - Hampshire

My Journey is part of a collective initiative funded by the Department for Transport to promote travel choices specific to individuals living, working and interacting in Hampshire, Southampton and Portsmouth City areas.  It provides a one-stop shop for a wide range of travel information within Hampshire including cycle and walking maps, details of local cycling and walking groups, live rail updates, bus timetables and also provides useful tips on how to save money and get fitter by switching mode of transport whenever you can.

My Journey also includes a Personalised Travel Planning service for people living and working in the County.    It helps you plan a journey whether by foot, cycle, bus and rail or even by car, linking to live timetables and traffic updates.

Through My Journey, Hampshire County Council and its partners want to help groups of residents to take up the type of active travel that suits you best.  Some have asked for support to find undercover cycle parking, some want a confidence boost from adult cycle training, others have asked for advice on countryside trips by bus, bike and train while others have found car sharers to help reduce their regular travel costs.

Click here for more information on personalised travel planning for Hampshire residents.

As well as live travel updates, My Journey is also a great source to find out about local travel events such as the New Forest Walking Festival, national Walk to School or Walk to Work days or even details of local cycling club events.

If you have your own ideas about personalised travel that you’d like to see supported, or would like some transport advice for getting around, please contact the My Journey team by filling the form on their dedicated website.

Local Transport Information and Map for The Sidings

Most of the information on local travel choices available in the Eastleigh area are available at the My Journey website above but as a starter, we have summarised the key information relating to The Sidings on the map below.

Local amenities

Eastleigh town centre itself is located less than half a mile from your new home; that’s just under a 10 minutes’ walk along Twyford Road at a normal pace.  The town centre, including the Swan Shopping Centre, will give you access to all necessary amenities including local shops and larger supermarkets but also to the Eastleigh bus and rail stations, both approximately 8 minutes’ walk from your home.

Being located in a central location also means that The Sidings are within close proximity to doctor surgeries, dentists and pharmacies, schools and leisure facilities as well as large local employers; all easily accessible by a wide range of transport means.

Marks and Spencers Food coming soon to Eastleigh, which will be just a few minutes from The Sidings!

Xelabus is one of the main bus operators in and around Eastleigh and along with a few others stopping at the main bus station at Eastleigh Rail Station, they will provide a range of services to a large number of destinations for you and your family.

The nearest bus stops to The Sidings can be found on Twyford Road just north of its junction with St John’s Road but the bus station is located a short walk away in the opposite direction.

Detailed information on local bus services are available on the My Journey and Eastleigh Borough Council websites above but have you heard of Solent Go?  The Solent Go travelcard now makes it easier to travel across South Hampshire by bus, ferries and even on the Hovercraft.  Your Solent Go travelcard also gives you access to the City Car Club in Southampton as well as all over the UK. These can be hired from parking bays across the city for just an hour or two, or for as long as you need.  If you are interested in taking the bus, why not take advantage of a 7-day Solent Go taster ticket of a value of £30?  Details on eligibility for all new The Sidings residents and how to claim are provided below.

Travelling by train from The Sidings is easy.  Eastleigh Rail Station is easily accessible by foot or cycling and is served by a major rail network of services to the surrounding Solent area and by direct trains to London Waterloo, Salisbury and Poole, making it a great alternative to the car for both regular journeys such as going to work and school or occasional trips for leisure or visiting friends.

For greater details on what facilities are available at Eastleigh Rail Station (parking, access by wheelchair, etc.), timetables and routes, visit the National Rail or My Journey websites.

Cycling is a great way to not only get fit but also to beat the traffic on many an occasion.  The Council is working hard to make cycling in town safer and easier and is also supporting other organisations promoting leisure cycling.  There are loads of useful links on Eastleigh Borough Council’s website for those who want to make the most of their cycling journeys, including details of where to find adult and children cycle training, how to plan your journey on cycle-friendly routes and where to find suitable cycle parking.

In addition, as part of Taylor Wimpey’s ongoing commitment to creating sustainable developments, you can apply for a cycle voucher of up to £50 per household to use towards the purchase of a new bike, safety bike equipment and accessories or servicing of your existing bicycle.  Details on eligibility for all new The Sidings residents and how to claim are provided below.

Sometimes driving is still the most convenient way to travel but if you are making regular journeys to work, car sharing might help you save money or simply might make your trip more enjoyable.  To find someone to car share with, you could sign up with HantsCarShare, part of the national Liftshare database, and easily join for free the 710,000 people already registered.  For more information click here.

If you drive less than 5,000 miles a year, the cost of running a car or even more than one can become prohibitive but there is a way for people living in Eastleigh to enjoy the benefits of a car without having to own it.  Co-Wheels operate a ‘pay by the hour’ car club from Eastleigh town centre, all day every day and in partnership with Eastleigh Borough Council are currently offering Eastleigh residents the opportunity to join with no fees or membership charges for three months as well as up to £20 driving credit.  For more information, visit http://www.co-wheels.org.uk/ or telephone 0845 602 8030 and click on this link for details of the current offer.

Bus and Cycle Vouchers

If you would like the opportunity to try a different way to travel, Taylor Wimpey and its partners are offering up to £80 in travel vouchers to new residents of The Sidings.  There are two vouchers available and you can apply for either or both depending on your needs:

  • A 7-day Solent Go Travelcard* of a value of £30 to be used on any participating bus services within the Solent Zone, and;
  • A £50 Cycle Voucher to be redeemed at any local Halfords store towards the cost of either a new adult bike, safety bike equipment or accessories or the annual service of your existing bike.

To be eligible for these vouchers, you must be the first registered owner of the property at The Sidings.  You can only make one claim per household for one or both vouchers but the maximum total value of the vouchers cannot be combined.

* The travel card will be activated upon first use and will be valid for up to 7 consecutive days thereafter.  Once expired, it will not be possible to top up the taster card but you can register online as an individual for any of the tickets available at the Solent Go website (www.solentgo.co.uk) if you wish to continue using the service.

To claim your voucher(s), please download the form and once completed, return at the address provided on the form.

Daniel decides a new home is perfect for a proposal

“Katie didn’t have a clue that I was going to propose. She was working the day before our appointment and I was off, so she just thought I’d been packing all day.

“I then told her I wanted to wear nice clothes to take pictures of our first new house and sign the contract and fortunately she agreed! When we arrived Natasha and the other Taylor Wimpey staff were there as Katie was expecting.

“I knew the first room Katie would go in was the kitchen because she loves the kitchen so much. But when she opened the door to the lounge and saw all the balloons and the Cornish flag she realised what was going on. I explained to her how much I love her and went down on my knee to pop the question and without hesitation she said ‘yes’!

“The prices of the homes at The Sidings fit our budget and the location was just perfect. We felt this place was somewhere we wanted to live. We both fell in love with the drawing of the house and know we will stay here for a long time. We particularly like the kitchen because it is so new and open.

“Because of our deafness we were worried about communication, but Taylor Wimpey were very helpful and it was stress free! I’d like to thank Taylor Wimpey for everything they have done.”

Taylor Wimpey Phil Cataffo NHBC winner2

Phil Cataffo has notched up seven Quality Awards!

The Sidings Site Manager wins prestigious house-building award

Phil Cataffo, Senior Site Manager at The Sidings in Eastleigh, has beaten off stiff competition from around 16,000 other Site Managers to be honoured with an NHBC (National House-Building Council) Pride in the Job Quality Award for the seventh time.

Pride in the Job Quality Awards are presented following a stringent judging process by NHBC inspectors who perform spot checks and continuous assessment of developments throughout the year.

The award recognises Phil’s consistent dedication to building high-quality homes for new homebuyers and provides purchasers with the assurance that The Sidings provides top-quality properties and excellent customer service.

Phil started working for Taylor Wimpey in 1996 as an Assistant Site Manager, so his years of experience give him a clear understanding of the role of all his team at The Sidings. His dedication to the job means that in the past 20 years, he’s notched up seven Quality Awards at various development sites – and has twice earned the Seal of Excellence, the next stage in the annual NHBC competition.

Sarah Pasco, Managing Director for Taylor Wimpey Southern Counties, said: “I’d like to congratulate Phil for winning yet another Quality Award – his success is thoroughly deserved and we’ll all be supporting him as he progresses through to the regional heats and hopefully to the grand final in London.

“Here at Taylor Wimpey Southern Counties, we are committed to maintaining the highest levels of quality and customer service, and we’re delighted that Phil’s dedication to the job has been recognised in this way.”

Pride in the Job is the only UK-wide awards scheme that recognises the significant contribution of Site Managers who achieve the highest standards in new home construction.

The scheme has been instrumental in raising the build quality of new homes in the UK for over three decades. The regional events take place in the autumn, whilst the Supreme Awards gala final will be held in London in January 2017.

Daniyal dashes to the front of the queue at The Sidings!

Taylor Wimpey - Daniyal Shah at The Sidings

Daniyal and Natasha at The Sidings Development

When Daniyal Shah received a text to say his dream home was officially on sale at The Sidings, he wasted no time in snapping it up...

Daniyal (28) had patiently waited for 18 months for the stylish two-bedroom ‘Stirling’ coach house to go on sale – so when it was finally released in February he made sure he was at the front of the queue!

“I used to go to the sales office every day to find out when the ‘Stirling’ was going to be available,” recalls Daniyal. “As soon as I got the text I ran to the sales office – I was there within five minutes and I reserved the property straight away!”

Daniyal – who works as a broadcast engineer for Arqiva in Winchester – fell in love with the contemporary coach house thanks to its generous interior layout and attractive price tag.

“I’m a first-time buyer so I couldn’t really afford one of the larger houses at The Sidings,” he explains. “I really liked the design of the ‘Stirling’ and it was well within my price range too.”

Living just around the corner in rented accommodation, Daniyal kept a close eye on the development’s progress over the years with the aim of one day calling The Sidings his home.

“I did look at other developments in the area but they were so much more expensive and not that suitable for first-time buyers,” explains Daniyal.

“Taylor Wimpey offered the best quality for the right price and I got a good feeling from The Sidings – it’s got a premium, prestigious feel to it.

“The development location is also a big selling point for me – it’s within walking distance of the train station and the M3 is really easy to get to as well, which will be ideal for my commute to work.”

Daniyal used the Government-backed Help to Buy scheme to purchase his new home, which meant he only required a 5% deposit.

He says: “The scheme definitely made the process more affordable for me. Saving for a 25% deposit can be really challenging as a first-time buyer so Help to Buy was a much better option.”

The Help to Buy incentive enables eligible purchasers to secure a Government loan for up 20% of the full price of their new home – so they only require a 75% loan-to-value mortgage.

Daniyal continues: “I’ve been really pleased with the Taylor Wimpey staff at The Sidings – they’ve helped me a lot throughout the process.”

With an expected completion date in October, Daniyal is now counting down the months until he finally gets the keys to his stunning new ‘Stirling’ home.

He adds: “I’m really looking forward to moving in – I love the layout of my new home, especially the large master bedroom which even has its own en-suite!”

Help to Buy opens the door for Nicola and Keith

 Venton Case Study

Nicola and Keith, residents at The Sidings

“Previously we lived in a pub in the nearby village of Upham where Keith was the publican and head chef. We lived above it for a long time, but eventually we came to the decision it was no longer the lifestyle we wanted as a young family and so looked to leave it behind and make a change.

“We decided to purchase a new-build because Keith and I have such busy work schedules that we have very little family time, so by choosing a brand new home we’re able to spend more quality time together with our son Alfie, rather than doing DIY work and decorating at the evenings and weekends, so it really suited all of our needs.

“Without the Help to Buy scheme we wouldn’t have been able to get this house, and it also meant we were able to customise the interior and have it the way we wanted and that suited our family.

“We wanted somewhere that was still close enough to Alfie’s school as it was a priority for us to not move him, so the location of The Sidings is ideal.

“We’re also close to the M3 and M27, which makes commuting to work easier, as I am based in Portsmouth.

“As well as having good travel links, we’re close to Eastleigh town centre which has good entertainment opportunities including a cinema and a bowling alley, plus we can easily travel to London when we want to see a show, so it was very appealing to us and has ticked all of our boxes.

“The ‘Broadsman’ is a really spacious house and we were able to choose our own interior Options so that we could personalise it.

“Alfie is really happy as we now have our own garden that he can play in, which we didn’t have before – there was only a pub garden and there were often people with dogs there and he didn’t always like that, so now he loves playing both in and outside the new house.

“The Taylor Wimpey staff were helpful and kept us well informed, the service we’ve received from the team on site since moving in has exceeded all of our expectations in every way.

“As we were among the first residents to move in at the development there’s still a lot of building work going on, but the levels that Taylor Wimpey have gone to in order to be respectful and considerate is fantastic.

“They’ve been jet-washing our road and driveway, taking in packages for us when our new furniture has arrived and they even helped us put shelves up, so they’ve really gone above and beyond to help out.

“I can’t give enough praise to Gareth and Phil, the Site Managers – they’ve been excellent at communicating with us and if there’s ever a problem they’re so quick to sort it out. Once you’ve moved in you’re definitely not forgotten about! We’re all really enjoying living here.”
