The awe-inspiring Norman Abbey, which plays host to an eclectic annual music programme, dominates the town and is surrounded by medieval streets. Watermills play an important part in the history of Romsey (The Domesday Book of 1086 providing the earliest record of watermills here), and Sadler’s Mill, dating back to the 16th century, is almost certainly the most famous of the town’s surviving mills.
Romsey Abbey, originally built to house a community of Benedictine nuns, is open daily to visitors. You may also wish to take part in The Mayor’s Picnic – famous for its popular Duck Race – hosted mid-summer and held in Romsey’s Memorial Park. Or perhaps you'd prefer the medieval King John's House, Tudor Cottage and former Victorian Gun shop, which together make a new heritage centre that boasts amazing period gardens and a bubbling mill stream as well as offering spellbinding displays.
In Romsey, the past, present and future merge successfully and the recently renovated town centre now boasts a Waitrose supermarket, a department store, and over 100 other retail outlets, including high street chains and local shops, catering to all the needs of modern living.

Ben and Emma get a helping hand onto the property ladder
Ben Kaintoch and Emma Clayton are settling into their new home at Taylor Wimpey's Abbotswood development
“Help to Buy has been completely invaluable in helping us afford somewhere bigger. We went in looking at three-bedroom places but could afford a lot more with Help to Buy – in fact if we’d been willing to wait just a little longer we could have even afforded a five-bedroom place!
“We’re really happy with our new home, our favourite room is the master bedroom which is a huge space and has the top floor completely to itself. It’s such a nice space to be in.
“I also really like the kitchen as I love to cook. It’s a decent space, big enough to have table and chairs in there so Emma can sit while I cook dinner, chat and have a glass of wine.
“Taylor Wimpey has been fantastic, from the moment we walked in right until now the sales team has always been there to help. We wanted to be in quickly and they helped us do that. They were honest with us and wanted to do the best for us.
“It’s absolutely fantastic the way we’ve been treated and not just by one person but by every single person working here – it’s just the service they give here.”

"I was very impressed with the development"
Stephen and Joy Mokhof are settling into their new home at Taylor Wimpey's Abbotswood
“Although we’d been house-hunting for a while, when I first visited Abbotswood it was on business rather than because I was looking for a home there.
“I was very impressed with the development. All the homes were nice and the showhome was just jaw-dropping. My perception of new-builds had previously not been great, but Taylor Wimpey is different.
“For example, the number and size of windows in their homes mean there’s lots of light, which makes such a difference to how it feels inside.
The development also has an excellent location. It’s very picturesque and I thought, if we can afford to live here, it will be a good investment.
“Help to Buy definitely meant we could buy the house we wanted. As a mortgage advisor, I can see that it’s enabling people to get good rates with lenders. People who might otherwise have been renting for a long time are thinking about settling down and others are finding they can look at a bigger home than they previously thought they could afford.
“It’s all come together at the right time. My favourite part of the house is the kitchen as I like cooking but I’m really pleased with the whole house and the excellent finish. It’s extremely well insulated as I can’t hear our neighbours’ light switches or their dog. And there’s no worrying about anything, because it’s all covered by Taylor Wimpey’s warranty.”

"We're looking forward to settling in"
“I couldn’t be happier, the house is exactly what we were looking for. We came from an enormous old house with add-ons here, there and everywhere and it constantly needed work doing to it. Here, everything is brand new and it really is lovely.
“We love the layout – it’s so light and airy and spacious. I adore the master bedroom with its beautiful en-suite and it’ll be wonderful to do the washing-up while looking over at the conservation area and all its wildlife.
“It feels peaceful here. We’ve met some of our neighbours and everyone seems very welcoming. We’re looking forward to settling in.”

"It's a great house with lots of room"
Chatan Mistry is delighted with his new Taylor Wimpey home
“Some friends told us about Abbotswood, so we came to look round and we really liked the houses and the layout. We were originally interested in another property here but it had sold, so we looked at the ‘Winchester’ instead and were very impressed.
“It’s a great house with lots of room, which is just what we needed as we both work from home and have a growing family.
“We are slowly getting to know the area and it’s nice and quiet. We haven’t looked at schools yet for our daughter but I know the local ones are very good. We already feel very settled here.
“We’re been really impressed with Taylor Wimpey. The Sales Executives have been very helpful through the whole process – from taking us through the Help to Buy process to helping us choose fixtures and finishes and then settling in.”

The Pridmores settle in at Abbotswood
“We’ve downsized from five bedrooms to three, because this is the home for our retirement – but we’ve plenty of room for guests, and the spare room’s never been empty. That’s what happens when you live in a pretty place!
“Hampshire’s a really lovely county, and all our friends want to come down and see it. The town of Romsey has everything we need – and Southampton’s only 12 minutes away too.
“We both really feel we’ve done the right thing moving here and it’s just lovely to have the opportunity to move on to a new phase in our lives.
“It’s such a pretty house, we love the kitchen because everything’s brand new, and we love the lounge/dining room because there are French doors to the garden, which is south-facing and very enclosed. It’s also in a lovely location on the development and Abbotswood itself is so quiet. It’s been very well done.
“The Sales Executives in the Sales Information Centre were excellent, we always felt they were looking after our interests.
“We definitely feel we’ve done the right thing moving here, we couldn’t be happier.”
Jane and Dave Pridmore, residents at Abbotswood.
Help to Buy opens the door to Sam and Katie’s first home
Sam and Katie enjoying the kitchen in their new home
“We were both living with our parents when we met in November 2014. Very early on we realised we wanted to move in together, so we started looking around to see how much we would need to save, expecting to purchase our first home in 2016.
“We wouldn’t have been able to make this move without the Help to Buy scheme, it was great. Our lawyers and mortgage advisors were so helpful and made the process seem so simple.
“We first viewed the house in February just before going away for a Valentine’s weekend, but the house was all we could think about the whole time and we were so excited we went straight back and reserved it the day after Valentine’s Day!
“We thought we could only dream of living somewhere like Romsey, but when we saw the properties that were on sale we knew it was an opportunity we couldn’t miss. Help to Buy meant the cost of the property was well within our budget – it really is the perfect home and we love it here.
“The location of our new home is ideal. Our parents are close by and our extended families are also local. The house is really close to the centre of Romsey, which is ideal for when we want to walk into town and having a nosey at the shops.
“Katie also attended the nearby Mountbatten School in Whitenap, so she knows the town well and has a lot of friends in the surrounding area, so we’ve had lots of visitors already!
“We love the design of the house – the size of the rooms is perfect, and the sky lights and Juliet balcony in the living room make it a really bright space. The spare room is ideal for when friends and family come to stay, and the exterior looks beautiful with grey cladding and the balcony.
“The staff at Taylor Wimpey have been really helpful throughout the whole process of buying our first home. This was an entirely new experience for us and they were really understanding when we had so many questions.
“It was also great that we could choose our own Options, as there were so many different styles available which meant we could really put our own stamp on the place.”
Sam James and Katie Osman, residents at Abbotswood
