  • Community

A charity that offers a ‘home away from home’ to the parents of seriously ill children who are being treated in hospital has been given fundraising support from leading local housebuilder Taylor Wimpey Oxfordshire.

Ronald McDonald House (RMH) Oxford provides family accommodation at Oxford Children’s Hospital – and is supported by I&A Restaurants Ltd, a franchise group of ten McDonald’s restaurants which is trying to raise £50,000 for the charity.

Taylor Wimpey has donated three luxury food hampers which will be raffled off as part of the group’s upcoming fundraising event – a mammoth 300-mile bike ride from RMH Oxford to Amsterdam via RMH Leiden.

Stephanie Wiltshire, Group Admin Manager for I&A Restaurants, said: “The bike ride is our main fundraising event for the year, and a major challenge for all involved. The support from Taylor Wimpey was a great boost to the fundraising efforts in the Oxfordshire restaurants. Support from local business is always well received and helps build awareness of a great charity” RMH Oxford provides 17 rooms where parents can get some much-needed rest, whilst being under the same roof as their children. Thanks to the charity, families are also able to use the facilities provided, such as a kitchen and lounge area, to help keep a sense of normality during difficult times.

Stephanie’s family benefited from the charity back in 2011, when her son was admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the hospital with bacterial pneumonia.

She says: “While Charlie was sedated and ventilated in the PICU and HDU at the John Radcliffe, we were able to stay in one of the rooms at the Ronald McDonald House, which enabled us to get some rest in between staying at his bedside. It was a huge help in a time of crisis, knowing that if something were to happen in the middle of the night we could be called directly from the unit and be with him in minutes.

“Thankfully he recovered completely and is now a happy and healthy five year old.”

Nikki Gibson, Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey Oxfordshire, says: “As a local housebuilder, we are always keen to show support for our community in any way we can – and we are delighted to be able to help the group with their fundraising efforts. We hope that our contribution will help them towards their incredible target.”
