It doesn’t matter if it’s raining or it’s sunny, members of a Llanelli group can look forward to getting out and about in the local community this summer.
Breakthro Llanelli, which provides care, support, education and recreation and leisure facilities for adults with learning disabilities and special needs in the Llanelli area, has been given nearly £700 by leading local house builder Taylor Wimpey to purchase a new gazebo.
The gazebo will be used as shelter for the Breakthro Llanelli stall at events such as Llanelli Carnival, which provide an opportunity for members to enjoy playing a part in the wider community as well as advertising the group and raising additional funds.
Taylor Wimpey is building new homes at Parc y Strade in Llanelli and is keen to support community groups in the local area.
Mike Jones, Treasurer for Breakthro Llanelli, says: “As a charity we are constantly fundraising, so we really appreciate Taylor Wimpey’s kindness in making this donation.
“We like to take our members to local events out and about in the community and the gazebo provides shelter from the elements, either to protect them from the sun or to keep them dry if it’s raining. Having a stall also raises awareness about the group within the community and gives us the chance to raise additional funds.
“It was quite windy last year and the gazebo we had took off like a kite, so we’ve been hunting high and low to get some funding to replace it.”
Breakthro Llanelli has been serving the local community for 30 years and, apart from employing a co-ordinator, is staffed by dedicated and trained volunteers.
The charity organises theatre trips, discos, parties, shopping trips and other excursions, as well as providing a Saturday club, a DVD club. The group also aims to offer two holidays each year for members.
Mike says: “The majority of our members are in sheltered accommodation and if we don’t get them out, they don’t go out. To see their faces when everything comes together is wonderful.”
Sara Taylor, Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey South Wales, says: “We are committed to supporting the communities in which we build our high-quality new homes, and so we are delighted to be able to help out Breakthro Llanelli.
“This fantastic local group does so much to help adults with learning disabilities and special needs as well as fostering greater awareness and understanding within the local community. We hope members really enjoy getting out and about at community events throughout the year.”
