Colour confidence

The cool grey walls that have been popular in the past few years are making way for some warmer alternatives. After spending so much time at home, people are keen to put their own stamp on their interiors, and that means choosing colours they really love. Nature-inspired hues such as green and sky blue are in abundance and look gorgeous teamed with terracottas, pinks and even tones of gold.

Not sure how to choose a colour palette for your home? A great tip is to look inside your wardrobe. The shades you tend to go for when buying clothes, accessories and jewellery are a good indication of the hues you’d be happy to live with.

Revitalised vintage

If design creativity and sustainability are both on your home decorating to-do list, this trend ticks both boxes. Look out for Insta-worthy homes showcasing vintage furniture that might have otherwise ended up in landfill. Beautiful antique cabinets are a beautiful and practical choice for a modern kitchen, retro drinks cabinets could add a quirky feel in a living room and an old chest of drawers can bring some cosy charm to a bedroom.

For something really creative, try using an old sideboard or console as a bathroom vanity unit with a countertop sink on top. If you’re going to try a project like this, remember to hire a qualified professional to ensure the pipework can be fitted neatly inside your repurposed piece of furniture.

Curve appeal

It’s all about comfort in homes right now, and designers have responded to the need for cosiness with soft-shaped furniture, lighting and accessories. Squishy sofas and armchairs with rounded forms are a lovely way to introduce this softly, softly trend, particularly when upholstered in a gentle fabric such as bouclé.

Want to bring curves into your kitchen? Try going for a round-edged island instead of the usual straight-lined design, or get your carpenter to round off your worktop corners. And don’t forget, this look is practical as well as stylish - curved edges are ergonomic and space-saving.

Multi functional spaces

Our homes have certainly worked hard over the past year and half with many of us working, schooling, exercising and trying to relax within our four walls. We’re now looking around our spaces and wondering how we can make them work more efficiently. Where can we squeeze in a desk space if we still want to work from home sometimes? Can we carry on the online yoga we so enjoyed during lockdown? And how can we provide space for the family to be together and also find time to be alone? These questions have got designers thinking, and the result is more ingenious desk ideas coming onto the market, as well as multi functional furniture that doubles up as storage, gym room inspiration and ideas for including a comfy seat with a view of outdoors.

One great idea you could plan for your home is a fold-down desk. You could either ask a carpenter to incorporate one into a living room shelving and media unit, or hunt in stores for some clever and compact designs.
