Pantone Colour of the Year 2021

Yellow and grey are the colours to covet for 2021 say the global colour experts

Pantone

Whats the latest?

Pantone have named Ultimate Gray and Illuminating (an optimistic shade of yellow) as THE colour pairing for 2021. Think soft pebble grey and a sunshine yellow side-by-side. It’s all about “A marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting”. Sounds spot on for a new year refresh.

Why these colours now?

It’s been a tough 2020, so an uplifting yellow-at-home might cheer up our four walls. Add in the quieter grey hue (inspired by weathered pebbles-on-the-beach) for a perfect Pantone 2021 colour match. These are colours said to help us face the new year with “energy, clarity and hope”. We’re all for it. Yellow to invigorate + grey to calm = 2021’s colour remedy for all.

Where do I start?

We recommend layering. Take a pale wash of grey as a foolproof, neutral backdrop and bring to life with fresh, yellow highlights. This works well everywhere. In the kitchen, try retro yellow accessories; in the bedroom whispery primrose linens; and in the living space, bold geo prints in ochre and pebble. Pantone’s Colour of the Year couldn’t be simpler.

Isn't it all a bit Eighties?

Well, yes, for those of us who can remember Bananarama, teabag T shirts and shoulder pads. But the 1980s are totally on trend today, so harness the throwback, candy hues in a modern, 21st century spin. Mix with natural materials like rattan, cane and bamboo. Glints of gold and brass will add an understated opulent edge. Play around and let yellow and grey be your guide.
