What to keep, what to ditch?

We reveal the biggest interior trends that should be on your 2020 radar

Trend #1: This year I will…up my eco credentials

2020 is all about sustainability. If Slow Fashion is overhauling our wardrobes, it’s time to be mindful of our interior choices and how they impact the planet as we enter a new decade. And with the high street launching ever more sustainable – and affordable – homewares, it’s simpler than ever to make an eco-pledge. Go cool with a conscience and pick organic cottons, repurposed yarns, bamboo and recycled glass. Seek out plastic-free brands with zero-waste policies and low carbon footprints and create a planet-friendly home you’ll love forever.

DON’T CHUCK OUT…well, anything. Upcycle worse-for-wear furniture with a fresh lick of eco-paint. And buy pre-loved treasures with style and a story…

Trend #2: This year I will…go even greener

Going green is official for 2020. In more ways than one. Eco-chic, sustainable homeware is a key trend (see above), but green hues are game-changing too. From rich emerald to spirit-lifting leaf and cool, neo-mint, green is the talk of the interiors world. And this all-embracing colour palette is set to sweep every area of our homes. In fact, online interiors hub, houzz.co.uk, has seen a 50% rise in searches for ‘green kitchens’ since 2018, while ‘green bedrooms’ and ‘green bathrooms’ are making their way on to the popular hit list.

DON’T DITCH…pale pink and peach blooms just yet, as these pretty pastel shades come to life against a green backdrop

Trend #3: This year I will…channel Great Gatsby glamour

Just a teeny hint of glamour can upgrade a lovely home to a luxe home. As we step into a brand new decade, we do so with a nostalgic nod to the roaring 1920s. Yes, Art Dec cool has reignited our passion for all things Gatsby this autumn/winter and continues to inject an elegant opulence well into the next season. Think Jazz Age for the 21st century, with a hedonistic mix of fringed lampshades, opulent velvets, gold bar carts and bold animal prints – without the need for a bling-tastic budget. Flapper dresses optional…

DON’T HOLD BACK…on mixing up chromes and golds with brushed brass and faded copper. Mixed metallics are a simple, sassy way to up the glam factor in every room

Trend #4: This year I will…create a statement eau zone

Bathrooms are back. Well, they didn’t ever go away. But for 2020, your eau zone is stepping into the spotlight to become a statement-making sanctuary for all to admire. It’s a place to unleash a creative clash-up while kicking back and enjoying a long hot soak at the end of the day. Think fabulous, geo tiles, a vintage-inspired brass shower, hi-tech, steam-free mirrors that play music and retro, glass globe lights all in one space. Try a bold print wallpaper in areas that aren’t too soggy and a black, gridded, Crittall-style shower screen for impact. It’s a place to have fun, to go for it and show off.

DON’T FORGET…storage. It’s essential to clear the decks and keep your stock of towels and toiletries out of sight if your bathroom is to be a haven of tranquillity and calm
