Clever ways to boost bedroom storage

Clutter-free bedrooms are the ultimate goal. A bolthole that’s cool, calm and collected will help you sleep better – and who wouldn’t say no to more shut-eye on the weekends. So, step this way for our top storage hacks and create a beautiful bedroom you won’t want to leave in the morning.

Down under

In an ideal world, under bed areas are best left empty to create an increased sense of space. In most bedrooms, though, this is too good an opportunity to utilise for an extra storage boost. Don’t stuff full with boxes, paperwork and shoes that spill out on every side. Instead, stick to one or two slim, under-bed boxes on wheels (either in a soft canvas or plain, sheer plastic) with lids or zip-up tops to prevent the contents from getting dusty.

Storage goal #1

If you’ve got the budget, create a bed on a raised platform and build in lots of bespoke storage drawers below. Or, go for a lift-up storage bed where you can stash bedding and linens.

Build it in

Storage staples like chests, wardrobes and cabinets are failsafe pieces of furniture for keeping clothes, shoes and bedding. But if your space has awkward corners, sloping ceilings or is simply on the small side, bespoke storage is the way forward. Try and factor this into your budget from the outset, as tailor-made wardrobes and drawers are a gamechanger for keeping clutter under control.

Storage goal #2

Make your built-in storage even more streamlined with invisible push catches and recessed grips rather than doors that will protrude out. Sliding mirrored doors are another space-enhancing saviour.

Hang it up

Some of the most effective storage solutions are also the simplest. We love the humble hook for adding an extra layer of hanging space to walls and doors and keeping floors clear of coats, scarves and accessories. A row of hooks won’t conceal all your belongings like a built-in wardrobe will, but they can be used to hang and display a jewellery collection for example. Show-off storage that doesn’t cost the earth? We’re in.

Storage goal #3

Pick out pretty metal hooks for a country-style boudoir or industrial locker-look racking for a modern, utilitarian touch.

Fancy footwork

If heels, flats, pumps and boots are taking over your life, introduce a savvy shoe storage hack or two. Rows of wall-mounted shelves to neatly house your growing shoe collection is a simple solution (to make it even neater, pop each pair in identical labelled shoe boxes or transparent containers so you can see what’s inside). Going down the bespoke route? Then ask your designer to factor in a dedicated shoe zone or cupboard. Imelda Marcos, eat your heart out.

Storage goal #4

If you own pretty jewelled heels or vintage stilettos that are too beautiful to hide away, fit strips of moulding (painted ‘invisibly’ in the same colour as walls) and hook up your heels for all to see…
