Keeping a close eye on the catwalk is key when it comes to creating a stylish home interior.
That’s according to Derek Taylor, Managing Director of Ishoka London, who expertly designed the stunning show apartment interior at our Chobham Manor development at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London.
“When you design a room, you should think of it like putting together an outfit,” says Derek, star of TV’s 60 Minute Makeover. “Take inspiration from upcoming styles and trends, and look at what colours are popular on the catwalk.”
Derek opted for different shades of purple for our beautiful two-bedroom showhome, including deep tones of aubergine and violet alongside softer colours like lilac and lavender.
He says: “Purple is very popular on the catwalk at the moment, and it’s a good colour for any room in the home because there are so many different tones on the spectrum to choose from.”
For the open-plan living area Derek decided on a lilac/mink base colour with stone-effect wallpaper, before accessorising to add vivid splashes of colour.
“These types of wallpaper have an industrial feel which is very much on-trend – it’s about mixing and matching old and new. We started with a neutral colour and then accessorised with lots of different shades of purple.”
But to avoid unsightly clashes, Derek advises: “Always carry a swatch of the base colour with you to make sure everything matches.”
The palette of purple flows effortlessly through to the master bedroom, with colour-coordinated accessories that help achieve a relaxing ambience.
“Accessorising a room is like accessorising an outfit,” says Derek. “In the same way that handbags, scarves and hats complete an outfit, scatter cushions, throws, and accessories complete a room – it’s the same analogy.
"The secret to making a style last for years is to change your accessories as the fashion and trends change. That way you can create a completely different look without having to redecorate the entire room.”
