It’s that time of the year, when the designer big guns roll out their top trends for the season ahead. Is it time to paint over all that grey and wave bye bye to rose gold? We reveal the winners and the losers for the autumn/winter home (and show you how to upcycle summer’s key pieces for a fresh and budget-friendly new look)
1. Pattern play
Geo prints in autumn. It’s a thing. So, get ready to embrace chevrons, stripes, and slick, mark-making prints on walls, floors and accessories. It harnesses the Scandi mood in pretty pastels, bold pillarbox hues or a striking monochrome palette. You decide. Fancy something a little more relaxed? Try a brass and glass hexagonal side table, oozing with Art Deco cool.
DON’T CHUCK OUT…your floral prints, as big beautiful blooms in midnight shades are still hot on the interiors radar
2. Take to the dark side
While we’ve dabbled with indigo, colour gurus insist that we’re moving full pelt to the dark side this winter. Think midnight blue, charcoal, forest green, even rich chocolate brown. Go top to bottom on walls, overhaul fireplaces and even kitchen cupboards. It’s daring, cocooning and works well with luxe fabrics like velvet for the colder months. Pair with mustard and ochre (the other two IT shades-du-jour) for a fashion-led palette you’ll adore.
DON’T DISMISS...sophisticated gunmetal, pale pebble and dove, as grey is still the perfect new neutral if you don’t want to do all-over dark
3. All that glitters
Prettier metals like copper and rose gold are on the wane. Give a warm welcome to a rustic, edgier line-up with bronze, brass and old gold taking centrestage for 17/18. These flashes of warmth are the perfect foil for this season’s love affair with a deep, dark palette (see above) and our penchant for pastels. Try out rustic golds on bathroom taps, a kitchen splashback or a bedside cabinet (just the legs will do the trick) and get ready to be wowed.
DON’T BANISH...rose gold and copper (or even chrome) to the designer dustbin just yet, as an eclectic mash-up of cool and warm metallics is oh so 2018
4. World traveller
This is a trend for everyone. It can mean an uncluttered, warm ‘hygge’ ambience for one or a simple, artisan Shaker mood for another. Mix up the organic, earthy vibe with a splash of 1970s cool and perhaps a colourful tribal print or artefact. Go with the flow. The key is to mesh pieces you love, give them space to breathe and let your collections evolve. Raid the attic for hanging macramé plant holders, bubble chairs and retro wicker for a unique style.
DIG OUT…holiday souvenirs and memorabilia (think clay pots, kilim rugs and tribal wall hangings) and blend in for serious staycation cool
