Keeping it in the family

Lots of us are only too happy to leave our families at home when we head off to work in the morning – but many people are influenced in their career choices by those around them.

Although the family dynasties seen in showbiz and political circles aren’t typical, there are plenty of families with multiple generations of teachers and nurses. Housebuilding, too, is an industry which seems to run in the blood.

Four members of the same family working in the same industry

Take Olivia Philip, a Sales Executive for Taylor Wimpey who works at a development in Bovey Tracey, Devon. Her aunt Viv Trivett has worked in the business for seven years, and is currently based at another development in Devon, while Olivia’s mum has also worked for the same company and her dad is a builder.

Viv says: “I had been working in fashion retail when I saw an advert for a part-time vacancy with Taylor Wimpey. The idea of helping people to choose and plan their new home really appealed to me, and within a very short space of time I was offered a development site of my own to oversee as the Sales Executive.

“I love the variety of the job – no two days are ever the same. You get to meet some great people and I love guiding them through the customer journey, from the point of enquiry to their moving in day.”

She adds: “Olivia is the daughter of my youngest brother, who’s a self-employed builder, so she obviously gets her love of housebuilding from him! She joined Taylor Wimpey a few months ago and this is her first job. She did her first training with me and she’s doing very well.”
