Keiran Welsh (25) from Armadale in Scotland attends Forth Valley College at the Falkirk Campus as a third year plumbing apprentice. He believes that his apprenticeship with Taylor Wimpey has already given him a boost up the career ladder, as he explains:
“Becoming an apprentice plumber has been a great career move for me. I had some experience as general labourer on a Taylor Wimpey site, and I knew that I wanted to progress in the industry. So when the opportunity to develop my skills and become an apprentice plumber came up, I knew it was a good move for me because I want a future in the industry.
“Working hard for four years and really knowing your trade is definitely a benefit in the construction industry, so I’m really grateful to Taylor Wimpey for my opportunity and the experience they have given me. I have the chance to see all the trades working together, and the opportunity to achieve the high standards Taylor Wimpey expects for their customers.
“I think about the customers who will live in these homes every day, and I wouldn’t complete any work on a house that doesn’t match the high standards I’d expect in my own home. So being part of the housebuilding industry is great way to make sure your skills are the very best they can be.
“My career highlight to date was winning ‘Apprentice of the Year’ when I completed my second year. I was naturally delighted personally, but I was also proud to be able to give something back to Taylor Wimpey because it was my opportunity to show them their investment in me is paying off.”
