Jamie Barr (22) from Garthanlock, Scotland, attends Glasgow Kelvin College Springburn Campus as a four-year bricklaying apprentice and he’s on the brink of the next stage of his career in the housebuilding industry.
He explains: “I got a taste of bricklaying when I did a National Progression Award (NPA) when I left school. I tried all the main trades but it was bricklaying that I really enjoyed and decided to get my apprenticeship in.
“Being an apprentice at Taylor Wimpey has given me a fantastic opportunity to learn and gain practical experience whilst also attending college.
“When I started my apprenticeship, there were very few apprenticeship opportunities and I was really lucky that Taylor Wimpey were looking to invest in the future.
“Working at Taylor Wimpey has given me valuable experience and the opportunity to develop and maximise my skills. I’m really proud to have been awarded ‘Apprentice of the Year’ twice, and I’ve achieved full marks in my skills test so I feel that my apprenticeship with Taylor Wimpey has given me lots of opportunities and the confidence to progress.”
Jamie sees his future firmly in the housebuilding industry. He adds: “I’m studying an HNC in Construction Management whilst I complete my apprenticeship to widen the opportunities that I might have in the future – one day I might even be a Site Manager.”
