This year’s hugely popular Wem Carnival in Shropshire went marching ahead once again thanks to a cash boost from our team at Taylor Wimpey Midlands.

With our Willmott Fields development located on the outskirts of town, we donated £500 to sponsor one of the bands at this year’s event, which took place on Saturday 3rd September.

Louise Green, vice chair and entertainment coordinator for Wem Carnival Committee, says: “Wem Carnival has been running since 1911, and is set up for local people to enjoy.

“This year’s event featured parades throughout the town centre, with marching bands, dance troops and fantastic floats, plus a whole afternoon of entertainment which was all free to the surrounding community.

“Taylor Wimpey’s donation was used to secure the booking for the Oldham Scottish Pipe Band, which has been performing at Wem Carnival for 19 years. The band is one of the favourite acts, so we always try our hardest to get them back each year and it’s brilliant that we were once again able to do that.

“The Oldham Scottish Pipe Band performed in the first procession, which started at 1.30pm, and then led the night-time parade at 7.45pm.”

This is the second time we have offered to support Wem Carnival, as we also provided a £500 donation to fund one of the bands in 2015.

“The carnival takes place on a two mile route throughout the town and everyone loves it – so many people really throw themselves into taking part and there were lots of amazing fancy dress outfits this year!” continues Louise.

“There are less than a dozen of us on the carnival committee and we’re all volunteers, so the entire event is self funded and we’re continuously fundraising all year round. We really rely on the generosity of donations like this.

“We were approach by Taylor Wimpey as they wanted to offer us their help once again. This is the second year in a row we’ve had their support and it makes a huge difference as we wouldn’t be able to manage without such generosity.

“We’ve received lots of kind donations from local businesses, which have helped with things like raffle prizes through to cash donations – it’s a fantastic event and the town is always heaving on the day of the carnival, which usually attracts in excess of 20,000 people.

“We’d just like to say a big thank you to Taylor Wimpey for this donation, as without help like this we wouldn’t be able to host the event and attract the people who make it such a wonderful day.”

Anne Wallace, Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey Midlands, says: “We were delighted to offer our support to the Wem Carnival for a second year running.

“This wonderful event has brought the local community together for over a hundred years, so we’re thrilled to be a part of the celebrations yet again and we hope everyone had a brilliant time!”

There’s a wonderful range of two, three and four-bedroom homes currently available to reserve at Willmott Fields.
