We have given a £500 cash boost to Leicestershire-based charity Pony Rescue, to help them continue their vital work aiding unwanted and neglected ponies.
Our East Midlands business unit donated the generous sum to Pony Rescue after the charity’s director, Craig Thompson, made an appeal for support on social media.
Craig explains: “Since setting up Pony Rescue at the end of 2009, my wife and I have paid for everything out of our own pockets.
“We contacted Taylor Wimpey on Facebook to see if they would be interested in supporting the charity and we were speechless when they got in touch to say they wanted to donate £500 to Pony Rescue – it was absolutely amazing!”
Pony Rescue is a non-profit organisation that rescues and rehomes abandoned, unwanted and neglected ponies across the Midlands.
Craig and his wife Vicky – who have both had horses and ponies since they were children – decided to set the charity up in 2009 after a pony was left outside their family home with a sign saying ‘please look after me’ tied to its neck.
“There is a national crisis with abandoned ponies and we receive a lot of calls from members of the public about ponies that have been left at the side of the road,” says Craig. “We also take a lot of ponies in from people who simply can’t afford to care for the animals anymore.”
But Craig and Vicky don’t just take the animals in – they retrain them, have them vetted and wormed if necessary and get them back to full health, before finding them a forever home.
“We have a long waiting list of people who want to take on the ponies,” says Craig. “But before we agree, we always go and see where the animals will be kept to make sure they will be well looked after. We also carry out unannounced visits to check that the ponies are doing ok.”
The couple can accommodate five ponies at a time in the stables at their home in Ibstock while they nurse the animals back to health. However, three out of the five stables had been looking a little worse for wear in recent years.
“Some of our stables were in a pretty bad state which is why we asked Taylor Wimpey for support,” says Craig. “Their £500 donation has been a huge help – we’ve been able to put the money towards three brand new stables.
“Having the extra money has taken a lot of pressure of us and with winter coming up the animals now have the nice warm environment they need.
“Taylor Wimpey is an amazing company and we think it’s great that they are supporting smaller, local charities like us. We’d like to say a massive thank you to them.”
