A community centre in Coventry has been saved from closure after a successful local campaign was supported by a £500 donation from us.

Canley Community Centre had been on the brink of shutting down for almost two years because it was underused and struggling to cover its costs.

But the ‘Save Our Centre’ campaign supported by our Midlands team, which is building new homes at our nearby White Willow Park development in Canley, has put new life into the community hub.

And the centre was officially re-launched on 5th September with a well-attended fun day which had everything from live music and dancing to a demonstration from the West Midlands Fire Service in which centre manager Ricky Hill was cut out of a car.

“The community absolutely loved the fun day,” says Darren Standbridge, one of the co-chairmen of the rescue committee. “I’m now very optimistic about the future of Canley Community Centre. And that £500 from Taylor Wimpey – to us it’s massive. We’ll be using it to give the centre some TLC.  We need things like repairs, re-plastering and secure shutter doors.”

Anne Wallace, Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey Midlands, says: “It’s great when we can help a group near to where we’re building, particularly as residents at our development will be able to use a refurbished Canley Community Centre.

“We’re all about contributing to a thriving community, and a successful community centre will be an important factor in that.”

Darren, a businessman, was asked to lead a campaign to save the struggling community centre early this year.

He has put together a management team to take the centre forward and led a campaign to raise immediate funds backed by the slogan ‘You Can in Canley’.

Now, following on from the fun day, the task is to generate regular income by getting more individuals and community groups to use the centre, he said.

“We’re looking at, for example, a martial arts group, a zumba group and a pre-school nursery,” Darren explains. “The centre has also got a lovely stage. I’m confident that we can now get things going in the centre so that it’s busy every day – the future looks really bright.”

There’s a superb range of two and three-bedroom properties currently available at White Willow Park.
