Stockton Pétanque Club in Warwickshire are celebrating the opening of their new playing pitch after receiving a helping hand from our team at Taylor Wimpey West Midlands, who donated £1,500.

Pétanque (sometimes called French Boules) is where the goal is to toss or roll hollow steel balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet or jack and the game normally requires a hard surface to play on – such as dirt or gravel.

John Emberton, Chairman at Stockton Pétanque Club, says: “We have been going for 25 years and have over 40 active members who play regularly, plus many more who come down and play on a casual basis. We have a wide range of members, our oldest player is 86 and our youngest is 13 and represents us regionally.

“We used to play on the car park of the nearby pub – The Crown Inn – but they recently got taken over by new management and due to a major refurbishment project we had to look for somewhere else to play.

“Fortunately, we were welcomed by Stockton Football and Cricket Club who supplied us with some space, but we had to do some work on the land to make it suitable for playing on.”

The new pitch – or ‘Piste’ – was ready for use at the end of August and the club had their first competition on the 3rd September.

John adds: “Thanks to Taylor Wimpey’s generous donation we were able to commission the first phase of works, and now have a new eight-lane Pétanque piste, which has been purpose built to provide a challenging surface for players – if we hadn’t had the sponsorship we wouldn’t have been able to get the work done.”

Elaine Cartwright, Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey West Midlands, says: “We feel it’s extremely important to support the communities in which we build our new homes, so we were thrilled to lend our support to Stockton Pétanque Club.

“It’s wonderful that the club has found a new place to play and we are pleased that we could be part of making it the new playing courts a reality for them.”

We’re preparing to launch a brand new collection of two, three and four-bedroom homes at our Cally Blue Fields development coming soon in Stockton.
