We have pledged to sponsor a school rugby academy’s top-performing squad for at least one year.

The Cardiff Blues rugby academy, based at Cowbridge Comprehensive School in Cowbridge, will use the sponsorship fund to pay for playing kits, training kits, transport, training equipment and medical costs, as well as funding a weekly physiotherapy clinic for the players.

The squad is made up of Year 12 and 13 students and is currently sitting top of the Welsh Rugby Union Wednesday Under 18 League.

Matt Silva, Director of Rugby for the academy, says: “This is an absolutely fantastic donation from Taylor Wimpey. The sponsorship means it becomes a much more professional product we are offering the students.

“When we were looking for sponsorship we distributed leaflets to all the local businesses and one of them was the Taylor Wimpey office. When they invited us in for a meeting and told us the figure they had in mind, I nearly fell off my chair. We were gobsmacked.

“The players are hugely grateful for this investment and it means the new rugby academy will have the best start possible.”

The rugby academy, which launched earlier this year, currently has 26 registered players and the number is expected to grow to between 40 and 50 in its second year.

Sara Taylor, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey, says: “When we discovered the school was looking for companies to sponsor the squad, we were more than happy to lend our support and I hope this donation will help them to secure success on the pitch.”
