Saving the frogs at Frankfield Loch in Stepps

Date: Friday 31 May 2013

The children of Stepping Stones Nursery leapt to a challenge from Taylor Wimpey at Frankfield Loch in Stepps to design some ‘Save the Frogs’ roadside posters, the aim of which is to encourage drivers to slow down on the approach to its development of new homes that enjoy a scenic lochside setting.

Over the summer months, there are large numbers of frogs that attempt to leave the waters of Frankfield Loch, and cross the road to their breeding ground that’s also near the approach road to Taylor Wimpey’s Frankfield Loch development of new homes. Whilst there are amphibian tunnels provided for the frogs to reach their breeding ground, unfortunately many choose to take the riskier route of hopping across the road.

The team at Taylor Wimpey West Scotland thought it would be fun challenge for the children to get involved in as Susan McDonald, sales manager adds: “We’re keen to encourage traffic to slow down on the approach to our development of new homes, and therefore hopefully save many frogs from an inevitable fate!

“Around 50 children from Stepping Stones Nursery embraced our challenge, and they have created some brilliant posters that we’re now considering using as temporary road signage to do our best to save some frogs over the summer when they’re most likely to be on the move.”

Getting involved in such a fun initiative has been a great way for the children to engage with their local community as Cheryl McVey, deputy head of Stepping Stones Nursery adds: “This challenge was great fun for the children and staff alike. It’s given us an opprortunity to teach the children not just about the environment, and of course the pond-life that we have our doorstep, but also about caring for nature.

“We’re so proud of the children’s work, and I’m sure their posters will be effective in slowing down traffic so hopefully a few more frogs will make it across the road safely!”
