Eleven-year-old Brett Massey is set to represent Great Britain in an international in-line skater hockey competition in America after we stepped in to sponsor his equipment.
Brett was selected for the U12 British squad after successfully trying out for a spot in the team and he’ll now go on to compete against 40 other countries in the World Championships in July.
We agreed to fund a new helmet worth £300 for the Chipping Norton youngster, who plays net-minder for the squad.
Brett says: “I have been playing for about three years now. My mum teaches swimming at the leisure centre where the Chipping Norton Trixters train and I used to watch them play and thought it looked really good fun. I like the fact matches are sometimes quite tense and it’s a really fast sport.
“I had to go to four try-outs for the British squad and I was really pleased to get picked from the hundreds of people who attended. The other teams we’ll be playing look very good, but it will be a great experience and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m so proud to be representing my country and, more importantly, my local community.
“I’ve been able to raise £1,500 of the £2,000 I need to fund the cost of the trip so far, which is brilliant, and I’m really grateful to Taylor Wimpey for sponsoring my helmet. You do have knocks and falls in skater hockey so it’s really important that I have good equipment!”
Brett is also organising a number of local fundraising events to raise money for his trip to America.
Darren McCormack, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey, says: “We’re thrilled that Brett has been chosen to represent Great Britain and are delighted to offer our support to help him realise his dream and compete in the AAU Inline Hockey Junior Olympics.
“This is a fantastic achievement and an experience he’ll remember for the rest of his life. Everyone at Taylor Wimpey wishes him the very best of luck in the competition!”
