Our Oxfordshire team recently joined a campaign to encourage young girls to explore alternative career paths by funding a line of clothing designed to show that both women and men can work in construction.
Staff at the Oxfordshire office teamed up with Not Just A Princess, a social enterprise that aims to challenge the status quo, ensuring women have a wider choice of career options. Founder Jennifer Toll has worked with a variety of industries to produce T-shirts bearing slogans such as ‘Little Pilot’ and ‘Little Scientist’. Thanks to our involvement, the latest addition is ‘Little Builder’, which went on sale in December 2019.
Jennifer was joined by Oxfordshire Sales Manager and Diversity and Inclusion Champion, Andrew Odams, and Sofia Edmonds, daughter of Managing Director Mark, at our Alder View development in Harwell to celebrate the release of the ‘Little Builder’ T-shirt earlier this month.
Jennifer said: “I founded Not Just A Princess because I was deflated by the lack of inspirational clothing available for girls compared with boys. It’s fantastic to have the support of Taylor Wimpey Oxfordshire - construction is a career that is traditionally associated with men, so to add the ‘Little Builder’ T-shirt to our collection is a huge boost. It was great to see Sofia wearing the T-shirt with pride and I hope it will motivate other young girls to fulfil their career ambitions in the housebuilding industry.”
Earlier this year, we worked with Jennifer at an event called Festival of the Girl, which gave girls and their parents the chance to explore topics including body positivity, physical and mental health and aspirational careers through a range of speakers, workshops, activities and stalls.
Mark Edmonds, Managing Director at Taylor Wimpey Oxfordshire, said: “It’s incredibly important that we promote our industry to both boys and girls at an early age. Housebuilding has been a male-dominated industry for many years but we are working hard to change that. There are so many opportunities across our business that are open to everyone. We are thrilled to continue supporting the work of Not Just A Princess and we hope that the ‘Little Builder’ T-shirts will inspire a new generation of housebuilders.”
The T-shirts are available here. 12.5% from each sale will be donated to charity partner Inspiring Girls International.
