Gillian and Robert Toohie lived for a number of years in a flat in Juniper Green in Edinburgh but they wanted and needed more space and a garden to accommodate their family. The couple couldn’t find the space they wanted within their budget in Edinburgh so they decided to extend their search and consider a new-build that was perhaps outwith the city.
They discovered our Calderwood development near East Calder and it was the most natural step for the couple, as Gillian explains: “We wanted more living space, a garden and ideally three bedrooms. We have four grown up children so our flat just couldn’t cope when our family decides to visit, so it was definitely time for a move. My brother had bought a Taylor Wimpey home in Dunfermline so I knew their homes were fab, and after checking out a few of their locations it was Calderwood that ticked all the boxes for us.
“Both Robert and I work in Edinburgh. I’m a pharmacist and Robert is a bus-driver, so moving to where we would have access to great transport links was absolutely vital. When we went to visit Calderwood we knew it was perfect for us – it’s easy to get to the Hermiston Gate park and ride, it’s really handy for shopping in Livingston and Edinburgh itself, and my dad lives in Currie so I wanted to be able to visit him really easily and Calderwood offers us that.
“The attraction of new-build with no DIY and minimal maintenance, as well a competitive price that meant we could move into a four bedroom detached home were also key factors as part of our decision to move to Calderwood.”
The natural setting of Calderwood was also a real hit with the couple as Gillian adds: “I’m trying to keep fit and I really enjoy the variety of paths and walks that I can take through the development, which run really close to the River Almond and right through to Almondell Country Park. I’m constantly surprised by how much nature just surrounds us at Calderwood - it’s just so lovely and calm here.
“We really liked the way Taylor Wimpey has approached the layout of this development – our road is a collection of different styles of homes so it’s really pleasing on the eye when you approach our house, and because there’s no through road we experience very few car movements and that’s really nice.
“We also like the planting that’s been carried out at the front of the properties, and the shared road space means that we’ve really noticed that cars really slow down, so we’ve seen children out playing which is lovely because it’s created an open and relaxed environment for us all to enjoy. We’ve also noticed the children play in some of the green grassy areas near our house so they’re obviously popular!”
The couple also like the different treatments and colours of the homes at Calderwood, as Robert adds: “You can’t escape the natural beauty of where Calderwood is set with Almondell Country Park on the doorstep so it’s lovely that Taylor Wimpey has reflected this natural style through the interesting exteriors that you can see across the development. It’s really different and it definitely adds character – we really like it.”
We aim to make buying a new home as stress-free as possible, and Gillian found the whole team were able to provide friendly and helpful service that was the total opposite of the experience she had over 30 years ago when she bought a new home, as she explains: “Buying at Calderwood was such a good experience. We felt that everyone at Taylor Wimpey was focused on us as the buyer to make sure that everything was tailored to our needs.
“The whole process was so much easier than my first experience of buying a new home many years ago – there’s just so many more options now, and the staff here at Calderwood have simply gone out of their way to make the experience of buying a new home easy, straightforward and stress-free.”
Karen Armstrong, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey East Scotland comments: “We’re delighted that Robert and Gillian are thoroughly enjoying their new home at our Calderwood development, and it’s lovely to hear they are making the most of the peace and tranquillity this incredible location offers them.”
