Pupils at Woodcote Primary School were invited to design posters highlighting the hedgehog highways installed at Castle Manor, which allow the prickly creatures to travel safely between neighbouring gardens in search of food and shelter. The entries are now on display in the Castle Manor Sales Office, and the winning poster, created by Aaliyah Thacker, received a £50 voucher.
Aaliyah said: “It’s great to have won and to see my poster in the Sales Office. The competition taught me a lot about hedgehogs, and I’m going to be keeping an eye out for them in my garden.”
Taylor Wimpey has partnered with Hedgehog Street, a joint campaign by wildlife charities The British Hedgehog Preservation Society and the People’s Trust for Endangered Species, to integrate hedgehog highways across its new developments.
Steven Clarke, Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey East Midlands, said: “It’s a real shame that hedgehog numbers have declined so dramatically over the last 20 years. Through our partnership with Hedgehog Street, we hope to raise awareness of the simple actions people can take to help protect them, and we are proud to play our part by installing hedgehog highways at our developments.
“We invited pupils at Woodcote Primary School to design posters to illustrate the highways at Castle Manor and were delighted with the entries we received. They were all fantastic, making it very hard to choose a winner. Congratulations to everyone who took part, and well done to Aaliyah!”
Couple move to Castle Manor for more space and modern living
Jacob and Holly, both 29, recently decided to relocate within their home town of Ashby, seeking a slightly larger home to suit their lifestyle.
The couple was drawn to Castle Manor for its convenient location, providing easy access to both the town and the A42 roundabout, making commuting to Nottingham simpler. Having grown up in the area, they also appreciated the market town feel and the family-friendly community.
Holly explains: “We wanted a home that offered a bit more space than our previous three bedroom house, particularly somewhere we could socialise and host friends comfortably. Castle Manor really ticked all the boxes for us – it’s close to town, yet still feels part of a welcoming community.”
The couple chose the four bedroom Marford, attracted by the detached layout and open-plan design. Holly adds: “We love the kitchen and how it flows into the dining area – it’s perfect for cooking together and hosting. The living room at the rear is so cosy, and we’ve really enjoyed making the space our own.”
Although they had considered older properties, the couple ultimately opted for a new build, valuing energy efficiency and the opportunity to personalise their home. Jacob said: “We looked at older homes, but most either needed expensive renovations or had already been modernised beyond our budget. With a new build, we could still add character over time and enjoy a modern, move-in-ready home.”
The buying experience with Taylor Wimpey was positive from start to finish. Holly explains: “Andrew in the sales office was fantastic. He guided us through the process, kept us informed, and went above and beyond with any questions we had. We were also able to take advantage of Taylor Wimpey’s incentives, including Stamp Duty assistance and upgrades to the kitchen, bathroom tiles, and carpets – which saved us both time and money.”
Since moving in, Jacob and Holly have been impressed with the development’s thoughtful design. Jacob adds: “We love that the development retains trees and hedgerows, making it a lovely green space. We’re really enjoying being so close to town, and we’re looking forward to summer walks along the public footpath to Staunton Harold and the Milking Parlour Brewery.”

Nature friendly show home garden
We challenged pupils to design a nature friendly garden for the new show home and the winning entry, from Ayla-Mae, aged 8, includes features such as bird boxes, bug hotels and a hedgehog hibernation shelter, which will offer habitats for local wildlife.
Ayla-Mae was invited to Castle Manor to see her design brought to life. She said: “I really enjoyed taking part in the competition and it was great fun to see my design in real life. I hope visitors enjoy looking around and that lots of wildlife will enjoy it too.”
Steven Clarke, Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey East Midlands, said: “We were so pleased to welcome Ayla-Mae to the show home at Castle Manor and we would like to thank all the pupils at Woodcote Primary School who took part in our competition to design the garden.”
Supporting the local community
Sands United FC Ashby has been awarded £500 from Taylor Wimpey East Midlands, after being announced as the winner of the house builder’s Community Chest competition.
Residents living in Ashby de la Zouch and the surrounding local area were invited to nominate local good causes. Once all of the entries were considered, Taylor Wimpey awarded Sands United FC Ashby with the top prize.
The football team, which is part of the stillbirth and neonatal death (Sands) charity, was set up for those affected by child loss, offering a support network where they can talk about their grief.
In a heartfelt tribute, the players honour the memories of their babies by proudly displaying their names on the kits worn at every match ensuring that their short lives are never forgotten and remain a cherished part of the team’s spirit.
