Construction of our new homes at Lairds Gardens in Kilmarnock is well underway, and the first new homes have been released for sale.
As part of our health and safety talk to nearby Onthank Primary School, we challenged the children to design a health and safety poster that would remind the local community of the dangers associated with playing near any construction site.
We have awarded prizes of book tokens for the top three designs as follows: 1st place – Abigail, 2nd place -Hazel and 3rd place – Neive
It is important to be proactive and work with local schools, as Deryck Schendel, Regional Health and Safety Advisor for Taylor Wimpey in Scotland, explains, “Health and safety in and around our construction areas is so important to Taylor Wimpey. As a follow-up activity to our in-school health and safety presentation, our poster challenge is a great way for children to demonstrate what they learned during our visit.”
Mrs Newall, Depute Head Teacher at Onthank Primary School, adds: “Following Taylor Wimpey's health and safety presentation last month, the children were tasked with creating health and safety posters. The top three designs will create a colourful and striking banner, and we are very proud of our children’s efforts to remind the wider local community never to play near a live construction site.”
We returned to school recently to remind the children at Onthank Primary in Kilmarnock about health and safety as construction at our development of new homes at nearby Lairds Gardens is now well underway.
With the summer holidays due to begin shortly, we were keen to promote the dangers of playing near any construction site. The visit was a helpful way for us to raise awareness of the children’s need to be extra vigilant as the building of our new homes progresses.
Being proactive with local schools has proven an effective deterrent in the past, as Deryck Schendel, Regional Health and Safety Advisor for Taylor Wimpey in Scotland, explains: “Health and safety in and around our construction areas is of vital importance to Taylor Wimpey. Taking this type of proactive approach with local schools allows us to reinforce just how important it is for children to stay away from building sites, and it gives us the chance to remind the children that building sites are not playgrounds!”
Mrs Newall, Acting Depute Head Teacher at Onthank Primary School, adds: “I was delighted to welcome Deryck from Taylor Wimpey West Scotland into our school to highlight the dangers associated with children playing near any construction site. It’s great that Taylor Wimpey understands the importance of our children’s safety and has created an interactive and proactive approach to appeal to our pupils. “Following Taylor Wimpey’s presentation, the children have been tasked with creating health and safety
posters that will be considered for display at the development to remind those in the wider local community never to play near a live construction site.”
We brought the magic and joy of an author visit to pupils at Kilmarnock Academy and St Joseph’s Academy through our funding of Live Literature sessions for local communities.
We are funding 13 sessions for children attending schools across east, central and west regions of Scotland to support celebrations around World Book Day.
Kilmarnock Academy S1 and S2 pupils had a visit from Neil Slorance, Glasgow based illustrator and comic artist, best known for his work on award winning comic Dungeon Fun and his work on Doctor Who comics.
The illustrator spent time with pupils exploring the benefits of reading and creating comics as well as some live drawing. The pupils, from the school’s Mindfulness Club run by the library and art department, also discussed how comics can be used as a way to relax.
Neil commented: “I had the absolute pleasure of working with the pupils at Kilmarnock Academy and sharing my love of illustration and comics. It was great sharing my work and also reading the pupils own stories. I was completely taken aback by how imaginative and talented they all were and I hope they keep drawing and writing!”
Audrey Ross, Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland said: “We are thrilled to partner with the Scottish Book Trust and contribute to the celebration of World Book Day 2025. By funding author visits in local schools in areas where we build, we aim to inspire young readers and support Scottish Book Trust’s mission to bring the magic of books to life. This initiative aligns with our commitment to supporting our local communities, and our team enjoyed meeting with Neil Slorance at our first event in Kilmarnock. It was fabulous to see first-hand the positive impact the session had on the students at Kilmarnock Academy.”
Live Literature, running for over 50 years, inspires a love of reading and writing and is delivered by Scottish Book Trust, the national charity changing lives through reading and writing.
Marc Lambert, CEO Scottish Book Trust, said: “With Taylor Wimpey’s generous support, it’s fantastic to be bringing author visits to children to celebrate World Book Day and kick start a love of reading which brings so many benefits to children. Taking authors into the heart of schools and communities provides a very valuable and creative experience for children.”
