New artwork celebrates Waltham Forest community

Featured prominently on the hoardings around the new development site, the piece incorporates many aspects of Waltham Forest life, including the iconic ‘Leyton’ sign, Leyton library, the Leytonstone film festival, the drag night at the Northcote pub, the Walthamstow wetlands, and the residents, shop owners and workers on Leyton High Road.

Becky and Louise spent time in their community talking to residents to find out what Leyton means to them. The resulting artwork was unveiled as part of an official groundbreaking ceremony for Coronation Square on Friday 22nd October.

Michael O’Leary, Acting Managing Director for Taylor Wimpey London, said: “We’re delighted to reveal the hoardings artwork, which was created by two Leyton residents who spent a lot of time talking to local people about their community. We hope that it will become a talking point for residents and visitors and we look forward to working more with local people in the coming months.”

Becky and Louise added: “We wanted the people and area of Waltham Forest to be celebrated in this artwork, by capturing community in all senses and types, and the natural beauty of the area from the abundance of parks and allotments to Epping Forest itself."

Cllr Simon Miller, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Housing Development, said: “It was an honour to present the mural alongside Leader of the Council, Grace Williams, at the ceremony on Friday. The mural on the hoarding, created by Good Wives and Warriors, reflects the diverse community of Leyton, and this is exactly what this project entails: the local community at the heart of Coronation Square."
