Kids art club designs bird boxes for our sustainability project

Children in Struthers Primary School’s Art Club in Troon have been busy designing their own bird boxes as part of a sustainability challenge set by our local development in Troon to encourage more wildlife into private gardens.

Celebrating sustainability

The children were invited to take part in a competition to paint their own bird box, and our sustainability champion, Maya Calvert, chose her favourite three designs before the children all took their bird boxes home to install in their own gardens.

We supplied the art club, which operates from the primary school each week, with all the materials needed for the project, and around 10 children took part.

Based on their eye-catching bird box designs, the winners - Abigail, Holly and Melisa - were also awarded with National Book Tokens.

Making sustainability fun

Every child also received a copy of our Ecotastic Activity book which is designed to help children find out fun facts about the environment, while also discovering some interesting ways that we are making our new homes and developments more sustainable too.

Our West Scotland sustainability champion, Maya Calvert, said: “We’re always looking for new and innovative ways to work with local communities near our developments, so we were delighted when Struthers Primary’s Art Club agreed to take part in our bird box design competition.

Adding colour to the community

Melissa Devlin, Class Teacher and Head of the Art Club added: “We were very pleased to be asked to take part in Taylor Wimpey West Scotland’s bird box design competition.

“The children had great fun coming up with the designs for and painting their bird boxes. Abigail, Holly and Melisa were delighted to have their designs chosen as Maya’s favourite, and all of the children were thrilled to be able to take their boxes home to install in their own gardens.

“We were also delighted to be gifted with a nature pack from Taylor Wimpey that we will put to good use in our school garden. It includes a bird box, bird feed, a book about birds, butterfly wildflower seeds and a bug hotel – which is great news for our local wildlife.”
