Why install a water butt?

A water butt is a great way to save water in your garden and help your plants to thrive.

Collect and store water

Water butts collect and store rainwater from your roof so it can be used to water your garden and houseplants. Here are five reasons to consider installing a water butt in your garden:

  • Using a water butt can save you money on your water bills
  • Rainwater is better for plants than water from the tap – it is naturally soft and hasn’t been chemically treated
  • A water butt can help you keep your garden watered when rainfall is low or there is a hose pipe ban in place
  • Using less tap water to water your garden helps to save energy and water which is good for the environment
  • Water butts are straightforward to install and don’t require a lot of maintenance

on your water butt purchase

We’ve teamed up with Water Butts Direct to offer our customers a discount on a new water butt. You can find the QR code in your home warranty box or ask your local sales executive.

Before purchasing a water butt, check that your home has a downpipe. This is the drainpipe that carries rainwater from the guttering around your roof to a drain at ground level and is where you will attach the water butt. All our detached homes have downpipes. Some semi-detached and terraced homes do not have downpipes.

Water butts cannot be installed on apartment buildings.

Your water butt will come with an installation guide. You can also find installation guides at Water Butts Direct, B&Q and Wickes. You will need some basic tools such as a saw and drill to cut your downpipe and attach the rainwater diverter. This carries water from the pipe into the water butt.
