Arthur and Karen find their forever home at Burdon Manor
After almost 30 years in West Boldon, Karen (62) and Arthur Storey (69) decided it was time for a change.
Having recently retired, they wanted a home that was easier to look after and would give them more time to enjoy their retirement.
Their search led them back to Ryhope, where they had lived after getting married in 1983. Karen said: "We moved into our three-bedroom Keeford in August 2025. We wanted a home that was more energy-efficient and easier to manage, and this property ticked those boxes."
Having lived in an older property for many years, the couple were drawn to the benefits of a new-build home. "After looking at different builders, we felt Taylor Wimpey's homes offered a higher quality of finish," Arthur explained.
The location was another key factor. "It's a great area with lots of walks for our dog," Karen shared.
"The solar panels, triple glazing and insulation were also appealing," Arthur added.
The buying process was smooth from start to finish. "The friendly staff kept us up to date throughout" Karen noted.
Arthur concluded: "We're retired, so the good transport links and nearby amenities make everything convenient."

We donated 1000 to Ryhope Community Spirit
A Ryhope volunteer group dedicated to bringing neighbours together has won £1,000 from Taylor Wimpey North East's Community Chest competition.
The initiative, launched to celebrate the housebuilder's new Burdon Manor development, invited residents to nominate local charities, organisations or individuals making a real difference. Ryhope Community Spirit was chosen for its tireless work organising community events and keeping the village clean.
Founded 12 years ago, the group hosts year-round events fostering neighbourly spirit, including Easter celebrations, autumn fayres, Christmas tree lighting and family day trips. Volunteers also run weekly community clean-ups, working with residents to keep Ryhope's green spaces tidy. Through these activities, they bring people together, nurture local pride and strengthen community spirit.
George Donnelly, Chairman of Ryhope Community Spirit said: "We are very thankful to Taylor Wimpey for this generous donation. This donation will help us continue to put on events that bring families together and create a welcoming, connected community."
Georgia Crosby, Marketing Executive for Taylor Wimpey North East, said: "Supporting local groups like Ryhope Community Spirit is an important part of our role in Ryhope. The group makes a real difference to the community, and we're pleased this donation will play a part in strengthening community spirit in Ryhope."
Ryhope Junior School design welcome card for new residents
We asked Year 5 & 6 pupils at Ryhope Junior School to design a ‘welcome to your new home’ card for our new residents at Burdon Manor and Burdon Fields.
The competition saw lots of enthusiastic children take part, each showcasing their artistic talents. We selected Ria and Maci-Neve as the winners, their designs stood out and perfectly captured the idea of the cards we had in mind.
They have both been awarded a £50 voucher and their winning designs have been transformed into a card which will be given to residents when they move into their new homes at each development.
Fiona Lynn, the Head Teacher of Ryhope Junior School, said: “Our pupils loved this competition, and we loved seeing their fantastic designs. Congratulations to Ria and Maci-Neve on their winning entries.”
