Why did you choose to become an apprentice with Taylor Wimpey?

After reviewing similar courses, I realised that Taylor Wimpey’s Management Trainee scheme was a great opportunity for me to get into the house building industry and progress with a company who are really committed to supporting my development. I studied Architecture at university and wanted to develop my technical skills as well as my understanding of the planning system -  this apprenticeship was perfect because it provided a combination of both disciplines.

What have you learned so far?

I have developed so many technical skills while working in this role and have gained experience working with a number of teams that make up the complex planning system. As I become more familiar with the operations of our business unit, there has also been a focus on my personal development, which has been interesting. I’m constantly referring to my trainee competency matrix, which is a guide on all of the core elements of my learning and this has proved particularly useful to highlight the areas in which I can improve.

How do you feel your apprenticeship has benefited you?

As a trainee, I’m able to learn in a live environment, which makes it much easier to understand the context of the work I’m doing and get used to the specific requirements of my tasks. I also get the opportunity to rotate to other departments, which has really helped me to understand how other functions of the business operate and how they link to my job role.

What advice would you give to people just starting their apprenticeship journey?

There’s a lot to learn so it's important to take your time and enjoy the experience before the responsibilities become a lot bigger!

Have there been any particular projects you’ve worked on that you’re proud of?

I recently drew a set of details for the lead coping on a parapet, which has since been built without issue. Detailing is something I had no experience of before I joined Taylor Wimpey, so I am proud to have learnt so much since joining the team.

What are your career aspirations?

At the moment I don’t have a particular role in mind, but I am just looking forward to developing within the technical department of Taylor Wimpey.
