First night must haves

Amid the chaos of moving, it’s easy to forget about the practicalities of the first day or two in your new home - it's a good idea to set aside 4 boxes with essential items.

Here’s a guide to help you decide what to put in each 4 boxes.

Your personal things

In the first box, pack essentials such as toiletries, nightwear and clothing. You’ll need toothbrushes, toothpaste and other essential toiletries, as well as a first aid kit and any medications. Also pack some pyjamas, underwear and enough clothes for a day or two.

Bedding is another essential for the first night, as well as some bath towels and perhaps a bath mat.

The kitchen kit

You probably won’t want to cook a full meal on your first night, but that doesn’t mean you won’t need some essential items. In the second box, pack a few snacks, some bread, milk and canned goods.

Include also, a kettle and a set of utensils and plates for everyone in the household, a can opener and a bottle opener. Don’t forget those other handy items like washing up liquid, sponges, rubbish bags and surface cleaner. And the most essential item? A bottle of fizz to celebrate.

The practical items

Prepare for all eventualities by keeping a torch handy, some extra batteries and an emergency lightbulb. Pack a vase to avoid having to arrange any flowers in your new kitchen sink. Most importantly, don’t forget to pack phone and computer chargers, and any paperwork you think you’ll need when you arrive at your new home.

Children's stuff

It can be both exciting and overwhelming for children when they move home, but a little forward planning will make things easier. Pack a fourth box with some toys, books and colouring pens to keep your children busy while you move in. Also, include items to make your child feel safe and comfortable in their new room – a nightlight, their favourite teddy and some comfy bedding should do the trick.
