We launch commission for artworks in Leyton

Coronation Square is a modern development of 750 new homes in the heart of Leyton. The apartments and houses will surround a vibrant market square, which will host a wide range of public events and activities.

The approved plans for the development include large permanent artworks in the entrances of the residential blocks, with 18 pieces in total. We are seeking a local artist or collective to create pieces that reflect the strong local creative community.

The artworks should reflect the vision for Coronation Square as a vibrant and mixed new  neighbourhood in Waltham Forest, for both residents and visitors. The artist or collective must work or live in the Borough of Waltham Forest or the neighbouring boroughs of Enfield,  Hackney, Haringey, Newham or Redbridge.

The development will host cafes, shops and restaurants, as well as a new sports hall, early years nursery and an NHS medical hub. Green space, including large open gardens and play areas, will make it a beautiful development that links seamlessly with the nearby Coronation Gardens and wider area.

Funding for the commission is set by the Section 106 agreement for the development, and will comprise £65,000 for the first phase of eight pieces, and £80,000 for the second phase of 10 pieces.

David Pelle, Land & Planning Director, said: “These artworks will define each of the residential blocks, linking them together with a bold theme that also reflects the wider area. We know that there are some incredibly creative people across the area and we are looking forward to seeing the ideas that people come up with for this commission.”

Artists or collectives should email [email protected] with CVs and a proposal by Friday 29th April 2022.
