We support Thomas Aveling’s Birthday Celebration

Celebrating local heritage

Our South East team continued its support of the annual event to celebrate the life of the pioneering Victorian engineer.

This year’s celebrations included a flower procession to the grave of Thomas Aveling (made by Strood Gardening Club), live music from the Invicta Ukulele Club Band, a range of vintage steam, diesel and motor rollers, plus an exhibition about Thomas Aveling and his Aveling & Porter company.

Michael Pearce, Chairman of the Thomas Aveling Society, said: “The day of the event turned out to be the hottest day of the year, but that didn't stop it from becoming our most well-attended event to date. It was really good to welcome both new and more established residents to our celebration of local heritage.

“The many vintage engines on display brought lots of joy to all those who attended, particularly the many face-painted children who thoroughly exploring these intricate machines from our industrial heritage.

“We would like to thank Taylor Wimpey for helping us to remember Thomas Aveling and for enabling us to remind everyone of his massive international engineering achievements.”
