Broadcasting House was the headquarters of BBC Cymru Wales' radio, television and online services, situated in on the north-side of Llantrisant Road. It opened to staff in 1966 before a royal opening by Princess Margaret a year later.
Designed by the Merthyr Tydfil-born architect Dale Owen, the building's modern style was defined by its white concrete and sharp angles. Dale Owen was a leading figure in the Welsh architectural scene, who was heavily influenced by practices in the United States. Although he was born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1924, he attended Whitchurch Grammar School and went on to study at the Welsh School of Architecture in 1941.
Prompted by outdated and unreliable technology at its existing premises in Llandaff, in August 2013 the BBC announced that the sites would be sold as part of its plans to relocate to a new purpose-built broadcasting headquarters at Central Square. This relocation in 2020 was part of one of the biggest urban regeneration projects in Cardiff’s history. The sale and release of the sites for the proposed alternative use was important to the delivery of this relocation project and retention of BBC Wales in Cardiff City Centre.
Ty Oldfield lies on the south side of Llantrisant Road. This was originally built as a Home Economics College between 1955 and 1965 on fields alongside The Rookwood House Northern Lodge, which was built as part of the Rookwood Estate, a Gothic Mansion dated back to 1866.
The second phase of television studios at Broadcasting House took place in the 1970s, requiring the demolition of Baynton House in 1975. The grounds also included the original outdoor set for the S4C drama Pobl y Cwm. In 1986 the BBC bought University College Cardiff's School of Home Economics across Llantrisant Road and created a new administration, finance and archive block, renaming it Tŷ Oldfield as a tribute to former controller Alun Oldfield-Davies.

Our Local Investment
A home is more than just a house, it's also about the community that surrounds it. And that's why we invest in building communities that support local businesses, improve facilities in the area and help bring people together. At Taylor Wimpey, we design sustainable developments that meet the needs of residents, so as part of our commitment to ensure that Parc Llandaf can successfully integrate with, and contribute to, the sustainability of the local area, are contributions include:
We support Willows High School
We opened our doors to a group of eager students from Willows High School in Cardiff. As a Valued Partner, Taylor Wimpey South Wales, in collaboration with Careers Wales, has been nurturing this partnership for almost eighteen months, aiming to inspire the next generation of construction professionals.
The first of three planned site visits at the Parc Llandaf development took place on 24th October 2023. It was a day filled with excitement, as the students got an up-close look at the construction industry in action. We believe that fostering a deeper connection with the community is vital, and this initiative is a testament to that commitment.
The engagement with Willows High School will continue, with the next visit scheduled for February 2024 and another in the summer term of the same year. We're dedicated to helping these young minds visualise a promising career in the world of construction, inspiring them to build their own bright future.
Local student has her winning bedroom design brought to life.
Year 7 student Darcey from The Bishop of Llandaff Church in Wales High School won Taylor Wimpey South Wales' bedroom design competition. Her winning concept has been brought to life in the Dale show home at Cardiff's Parc Llandaf development. Darcey's design was selected for its outstanding creativity and practicality.
The competition challenged local students to create their ultimate bedroom designs, focusing on originality, practicality, and creativity. It aimed to inspire students to explore interior design while expressing their personal style.
Mrs Rees, Head of Lower School, expressed pride in Darcey's achievement, while Kellie Risdale, Sales Manager at Taylor Wimpey South Wales, highlighted how the initiative engaged young creative minds and connected them with the local community.
We hosted a sustainability session for pupils in Cardiff
Pupils at Ysgol Pencae in Cardiff recently enjoyed a lesson on sustainability with our Apprentice Manger, Johanne Jones.Johanne delivered an interactive workshop to the Year 5 and 6 pupils where the children discovered more about our development’s sustainability features including, electric-charging points and bird boxes, and also learned about renewable energy.
Siwan Dafydd, Headteacher at Ysgol Pencae said: “We’re very grateful to Taylor Wimpey South Wales for coming down to our school and talking about important topics. The Year 5 and 6 pupils are currently learning about the subject of sustainability and so it was great for the children to learn more about how Taylor Wimpey is building a sustainable future. Johanne’s engaging talk really sparked an interest in many of our pupils and we look forward to helping them learn more about being environmentally conscious."
Welcome to Parc Llandaf
If you’re looking to join an idyllic retreat from the world in a thriving community, while still having access to the best of bustling Cardiff, then Parc Llandaf is the perfect place for you to call home.
The scenic Taff Trail runs alongside the site, giving residents easy access to nature and the nearby countryside. Career Wales Valued Partner Awards 2025
We recently had the honour of attending the Career Wales Valued Partner Awards, where we were shortlisted in the ‘Best Ongoing Relationship with a School’, following our work with Willows High School and Corpus Christi Catholic High School.
Hosted by Career Wales, the Valued Partner Awards celebrates the work businesses have carried out throughout the year to help schools and young people engage in the world of work.
Johanne Jones, Apprentice Manager for Taylor Wimpey South Wales, said: “Whilst we did not win the award this year, we are very proud to have been recognised for the hard work and dedication from our team. Congratulations to the winners, BBC Cymru Wales, and thank you to Career Wales for the opportunity to work so closely with both of these schools based in Cardiff.”Book an appointment
