Pontyclun community group awarded 1000 donation from Taylor Wimpey South Wales
Taylor Wimpey South Wales has announced Café 50 as the winner of its £1,000 Community Chest award, recognising the group’s outstanding contribution to the Pontyclun community.
Café 50 is a local social centre for people over the age of 50, offering a welcoming space to meet new friends, take part in a range of activities, and enjoy a menu of affordable lunches and light bites. The centre plays a vital role in reducing isolation and building connections amongst the older residents in the area.
The donation is part of Taylor Wimpey’s ongoing commitment to support the communities surrounding its developments. Residents were invited to nominate a local cause they felt deserved recognition — and Café 50 received a number of nominations praising its positive impact on local lives.
Kellie Risdale, Sales Manager at Taylor Wimpey South Wales, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to support Café 50 with this donation. The team does a fantastic job creating a safe, social space for older people in Pontyclun.”
Tara Davies, Community Engagement Officer from Café 50 added: “This donation means so much to us and the people we support. It will help us continue to offer meaningful activities, meals, and companionship to those who need it most. We’re very grateful to everyone who nominated us and to Taylor Wimpey for their generous help.”
Miskin school pupils design flag for Melin Newydd
We challenged pupils at Ysgol Gynradd Gymunedol Gymraeg Llantrisant (YGGG Llantrisant) to come up with a vibrant and imaginative flag that represents the surroundings of our new development, Melin Newydd.
The pupils created a range of colourful entries, giving the team a tough decision to make. In the end, it was 10 year-old Isabel Thomas' design that took top prize, a creatively-designed flag showcasing the village of Miskin.
Mr R O'Neil, Headteacher at YGGG Llantrisant, said: "Our pupils were so excited to design a flag for Taylor Wimpey South Wales' new development. They got the chance to unleash their creativity and they thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. Thank you to Taylor Wimpey for making us feel part of the new community!"
Danielle Heard, Sales and Customer Director at Taylor Wimpey South Wales, said: "We were thrilled to invite pupils at YGGG Llantrisant to take part in our flag design competition. We're always seeking ways to get young people involved in the work we do and the competition shows just how talented the pupils are."

A home is more than just a house, it's also about the community that surrounds it. And that's why we invest in building communities that support local businesses, improve facilities in the area and help bring people together. At Taylor Wimpey, we design sustainable developments that meet the needs of residents, so as part of our commitment to ensure that Melin Newydd can successfully integrate with, and contribute to, the sustainability of the local area, are contributions include:We team up with Pontyclun Mens shed to build bird boxes
Pontyclun Men's Shed Pontyclun has been busy crafting bird boxes for Taylor Wimpey South Wales' Melin Newydd development. As part of its commitment to supporting sustainability in and around the community, the house-builder teamed up with the local group to create a range of welcoming homes for an array of wildlife.
The bird boxes have now been installed around the Melin Newydd development in Pontyclun, which created a safe place for birds and insects this summer and will continue to do so as we approach the colder months.
Men's Shed Pontyclun is a community group where local men come together to socialise and share skills over tea and coffee. Members can often be found working on projects in the workshop, tending the allotment, exchanging knowledge, or simply enjoying conversation. The group's activities continue to grow and adapt to fit members' interests.
Martin Hitchcock, Chair of Men's Shed Pontyclun, said: "Being part of this community project with Taylor Wimpey South Wales has been brilliant, and seeing those completed bird boxes installed at Melin Newydd brought real satisfaction. "Men's Shed Pontyclun has been a real boost for many of us, and we're constantly inviting retired and semi-retired men to drop in on our workshops where friendships are built over cups of tea while we craft and repair all sorts of things."
The bird boxes were then hand-painted by Ray Davies of the ARC Project, a local community group for people living with dementia, adding a colourful finishing touch before they were installed at Melin Newydd.
Kate Lacey, Sales and Customer Director at Taylor Wimpey South Wales, said: "It's been brilliant working with Men's Shed Pontyclun to put together the bird boxes for Melin Newydd. The Men's Shed is such an important part of the community - they do amazing work supporting local people, and it's exciting to see how they'll continue to develop over the coming years."
