Pennington Wharf wins major North West planning award
Flagship development, Pennington Wharf has been announced as the overall winner at the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) North West Awards for Planning Excellence.
Pennington Wharf, submitted by Taylor Wimpey in partnership with Wigan Council and Homes England, also won in the Large Schemes and Regeneration categories at the online ceremony, broadcast on 16th November at the YouTube Premiere.
The judges noted how Taylor Wimpey had delivered a marina basin, a promenade, commercial and retail buildings and 471 homes on the site in Leigh, turning a vast swathe of derelict land into a vibrant, inclusive community.
Member of the judging panel Steve Thompson MRTPI said: “The developer has worked closely with its partners over several years to bring forward this high quality, well-designed and popular housing development, which demonstrates a very high standard of design. The Community Hub and central space within the development provide a fantastic new facility and focal point for residents, whilst positive community engagement was a strong feature of the scheme throughout the development process.”
Taylor Wimpey Land and Planning Manager Nikki Waud said: “We are beyond delighted with winning not one, not two, but three awards for our Pennington Wharf development. The commitment of the team to engage with key stakeholders and the community from the outset is evident throughout the development and a great example of Taylor Wimpey’s approach to placemaking; to have this acknowledged by such an esteemed panel of judges is the icing on the cake. We look forward to progressing to the National Awards early next year.”

Community Hub – We are missing you! (Updated 3rd August 2020)
We would love to welcome back residents and the wider community to the community hub. We communicated back in March, and continued to keep in touch with residents to let them know about the temporary closure of hub. It was hoped by now we would be able to re-open however based on health & safety advice and local lockdown measures, it is deemed too premature at this stage to open and promote the activities that have been popular.
As we have always said, it is very much temporary and we would look to reopening at the earliest possible opportunity. We will provide regular updates on the progress towards our reopening date.
We take this opportunity to thank the whole community for their engagement to date. The hub has gone from strength to strength, the connection in the community is growing and we are excited to continue our involvement with the community once it's safe to do so.
We welcome enquiries on the hub in the meantime and can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org
The community hub at Pennington Wharf launched in December 2019.
Weekly events include: Yoga, Craft & Chat, Baby & Toddler Drop in Sessions, Mindfulness & Meditation classes and Circle dancing.
The hub is also proving popular for party bookings!
