Setting sail for success with literacy support for Londons youth
Hackney-based charity The Literacy Pirates is continuing its work to support children across London who face barriers to literacy and learning.Living in one of Londons most desirable locations from The Times
Poplar has recently been named by The Times as one of the most desirable neighbourhoods for 2026 by Hannah Evans and Victoria Brzezinski.
Long known for its proud history of social progress, including its role in the suffragette movement, the area has always been shaped by forward-thinking communities. Today, Poplar continues to evolve through thoughtful regeneration, excellent transport connections and a distinctive riverside setting.
Creativity is at the heart of Poplar, with community hubs such as Poplar Union running regular local activities and classes for all ages, and great sculptures from the likes of Tracey Emmin and Gavin Turk along the streets. There are also great food spots such as the E5 Bakehouse beside Bartlett Park which we have worked with, and regular stalls at Chrisp Street Market for everything you could possibly want.
Rivermark offers contemporary homes in this well-connected East London neighbourhood, combining a strong sense of heritage with modern living. From riverside walks and green parks to Chrisp Street Market’s vibrant stalls and cafés, it’s a neighbourhood full of character, culture and everyday convenience.

Setting sail for success with literacy support for Londons youth
As the UK marks World Book Day during the 2026 ‘National Year of Reading’, Hackney-based charity The Literacy Pirates is continuing its work to support children across London who face barriers to literacy and learning. The National Year of Reading is a government-backed campaign encouraging reading for pleasure, particularly among children and young people. For The Literacy Pirates, this focus reflects the heart of its mission: helping children develop the literacy skills, confidence and perseverance they need to thrive at school and beyond.
The charity delivers after-school and holiday programmes for primary-aged children experiencing socio-economic disadvantages, language barriers and difficulties learning. Each child who joins the programme is nominated by their teacher based on literacy attainment and wider barriers to success, ensuring that support reaches those who will benefit most.
The charity’s approach is grounded in evidence and powered by joy. By creating an environment where children feel safe, supported and inspired, The Literacy Pirates aim not only to close attainment gaps but to nurture a genuine enjoyment of reading and writing. With improved literacy and increased confidence, many children go on to catch up with their peers and approach learning with renewed motivation.
To support this work, we have donated £500 to the Hackney centre to mark World Book Day. The funding will contribute towards programme delivery costs, including learning resources and volunteer support, enabling the charity to continue reaching children across London who face barriers to academic success.
The Literacy Pirates said: "We’re delighted to receive this support from Taylor Wimpey. Their contribution will help us support more children across London to develop the literacy, confidence and perseverance they need to thrive at school and beyond.”
Michael O’Leary, Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey London, said: “The Literacy Pirates play an incredibly valuable role in supporting and empowering local young people to get into reading and boost their confidence. We’re proud to be backing their work to help young people near our development reach their full potential.”
