We have collaborated with the social and environmental enterprise network Community Wood Recycling, to create a hand crafted bird box and bug hotel which have been made from surplus wood and waste timber from our South Midlands developments.
The bird box and bug hotel have now been installed at Barnfield Place. One is located in the community garden in the centre of the development with trees and planting for residents to enjoy and sit amongst, and the other is in our Marford show home garden.
Since its inception in 2003, Community Wood Recycling has collected around 2,440,200 cubic yards of wood* that would have been wasted and sorted it for reuse in the community or making it into new products. Any material that cannot be reused is sent for recycling by chipping. This activity creates jobs for people who might find it difficult to get into or back to employment.
Tom Densham, Assistant Site Manager and Sustainability Champion at Taylor Wimpey South Midlands, said: “It has been brilliant working with Community Wood Recycling to make use of surplus materials on our development in Luton. As a result, we have two handcrafted and sustainably made items now installed on site to provide home and shelter to birds and bugs of all kinds, something that Taylor Wimpey is passionate about when creating new communities. We look forward to working with them more in the future.”

Supporting the local community
Charity work
We have donated £1,000 to Keech Hospice Care based very close to our development in north Luton. This has been used to purchase a new chair for the children's in-patient unit.
The hospice, which provides free, specialist care for adults in Luton and Bedfordshire, and children from Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Milton Keynes living with a life-limiting illness, requires a range of new equipment each year to ensure it can continue its services safely and effectively.
Deborah Skelton, Children’s Locality Matron, commented: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this donation from Taylor Wimpey, which has already been put to good use in improving our waiting room for patients and their families. Now more than ever, donations like this are incredibly important and allow us to improve the spaces that are so frequently used. Thank you again to Taylor Wimpey.”
Supporting the next generation
We hosted a construction taster day for Barnfield College students in Spring 2024 where they learnt about the build process, tried their hand at bricklaying, and asked our expert team about their careers to date.
On the day, the students enjoyed a guided walk-around Barnfield Place, where they observed different stages of building new homes, as well as getting the opportunity to interact with different employees for a question and answer session. They also got the chance to get hands on and complete a bricklaying activity, after a tutorial from the site team.
"Each element of the session was incredibly insightful and we are really appreciative of the Taylor Wimpey employees who took the time to talk with us and share their invaluable advice and experience in the industry.” Beth O’Connell, Group Head of Employer Partnerships for Barnfield College.
Giving a helping hand
When we heard that Bushmead Primary School (just around the corner from Barnfield Place) was in need of some support to repair one of their school buildings, we were happy to do our bit and help them get it back up and running. We donated £1000 towards their costs with repairs so they can set up a shop for parents to buy second hand school uniform from.
Local investment
A home is more than just a house, it’s also about the community that surrounds it. And that’s why we invest in building communities that support local businesses, improve facilities in the area and help bring people together. We're contributing over £4.4 million to the local community here in Luton.
